You cann't Install win98 after you Install your WinXP. But After you Install Win98 you can Install WinXP on different partition so you can select both of them.

Ok I'll tell you how to Install Win98 and WinXP on an empty hard Disk.

1st make atleast 2partitions of your HDD.Eg. C and D
Then Install Drive C with Win98. after that Install Drive D win WinXP. After you install both of them, when you reboot your computer will appear a selection menu like this :
1. Windows 98
2. Windows XP Profesional
Time : 30

NOTE: Don't install XP before you install 98. Win98 first then XP.

Feel free to contact me

This is a long reading, and I hope it helps! I also added two url's so that could help if you get stuck during the process. If you know anyone that knows how to dual boot, it would be in your best interest if that person helped you. And before advancing, i'd back up your hard drive if I were you in case there is infromation that you don't want lost.

Sharing a computer between two operating systems requires dual booting. You can use either operating system on the computer, but not both at once. Each operating system boots from and uses its own hard drives or disk partitions. If using Partition Magic, create a data partition and do not use the option “this partition will contain an operating system” unless you plan to use a boot manager other than the one that comes with XP and you want to hide the two operating systems from each other. Hiding one operating system from the other was necessary when dual-booting Windows 95 with 98 or dual-booting Windows 98 with Me. It is not necessary with XP and my personal preference is to be able to see the entire system from each operating system. Windows XP can also be hidden from the Windows 98 system by formatting the XP partition with NTFS. Windows 98/Me must have a FAT partition. More advanced users may prefer this setup. Any FAT32 partition will be visible to Windows XP but Windows 98/Me cannot read NTFS volumes. The older operating system must be already installed before starting the XP installation. Installation is very easy with only one thing that has to be carefully watched. Do NOT use the default choice of an upgrade installation. Ignore the message that this is “recommended”. That choice will over-write the older existing Windows operating system. Choose “New installation, advanced installation will then go in automatically onto the empty partition. If you have more than two partitions, there is an Advanced setting that will allow you to pick which partition you want XP to be on. After XP is installed, a boot menu will appear whenever the computer is first turned on. By default Windows XP will be at the top and will be the operating system that boots unless Windows 98/Me (called Windows on the menu) is highlighted by using the down arrow key. The default setting has a 30 second delay period in which to make a choice. Both the order of operating systems in the boot menu and the delay time are controlled in a hidden file boot.ini that is located in the root of the C: drive. It is a text file and can be edited with a text editor (after removing the attributes) but it is a better idea to do any editing from Windows XP. One way to adjust settings is to go to Control Panel-System-Advanced-Startup and Recovery- Default Operating System One final point is that the early stages of booting XP actually involve the C: drive even when most of the operating system is on another partition. XP installs three files in the root of the C: partition. These files are hidden, read-only, system files and include the aforementioned boot.ini, and two others, ntldr, and ntdetect.com. Dual-boot systems also have a file bootsect.dos. If these get corrupted, the system will not boot so I suggest making a backup diskette with copies.

i donot how this can happen. I was programming my computer from windows 98 to windows XP and the computer thought a virus was present and we had never been on the net or introduced any outside programs or data yet. I come to find out the 98 is not compatible with XP it was thinking the 98 program was a virus. This what several computer shops and technicians at a college university said. Your plan may not work. I did it once with 95 and 98. But never with xp.

1. VMware should allow you to run Windows 98 under Windows XP. 98 would run in a "virtual window". I believe VMware offers a free download.

2. Linux has the ability to allow booting of multiple OS's.

3. You could also set up your computer where Windows XP is installed on a removable drive. When the drive is in, XP boots, when you take the drive out, 98 boots.

4. Finally, you could use removable drives and a SCSI controller to boot all kinds of different OS's I run Ubuntu on my main drive; my second drive has XP, my third drive is Games under XP, my forth drive is games under 98 and my fifth drive boots 95. When I turn my machine on, I turn the key for the OS I want.

You have to have both Installation disk and the registration number for XP!

Go to the My Documents folder in XP and copy it to a CD/DVD. That is the default folder for your data unless you do SAVE AS, and direct the system to store the data some where else.

Disconnect your system fro the Internet.

Put the XP disk in first, boot and select New Install.
Delete all partitions. The create two partitions. When the system asks where to install windows, eject your installation disk.
Turn off your system. Turn your system on and insert the WIN 98 disk. Install 98 in the smallest partition, format in NTFS if that choice is offered other wise format in FAT32. you must load mother board drivers and utilities. Load all WIN 98 software
also anti virus and fire wall. Make sure that software is for 98. Do not load any software that is not for win98.

98 installation complete, shut down system, Boot up, putting XP disk in, starting XP installation. Install XP in the other partition.
DO NOT INSTALL INTO SAME PARTITION WITH 98!
Format partition into NTFS. Install motherboard drivers and utilities. Install all XP software. Do not install 98 software into XP partition. Install printer, anti virus and fire wall. Reboot system and connect to internet. Go to www.microsoft.com.
Upgrade XP system, SP2 and Office files. Install direct X 10 and Ms Media, all security files and patches.

Windows no longer suppor win 98!

Is Brooklyn in the house?? Just kiddin. Win 98 works on Fat32 and win xp works with both Fat32 and NTFS (filing systems). Most likely your installation was done with NTFS, so you will need to backup all of your files before formatting anything. Then... follow these instructions:

you might be out of luck doing it the way you want to do it.

Windows has announced that they will no longer be supporting 98. Even more so now that vista comes out pretty soon.

You will be able to do it with a program called Parallels it runs the second Operating system in virtualization .

Its not free but it will totally do what you want to do. And it will work great
