Let x = total number of Pat's marbles
Number that Pat keeps after giving half to friend = [(1/2) x]
Amount given to sister = (1/3)(x/2) = 9
Solving for x : x/6 = 9
x = 54
Number given to friend = x/2=27, therefore have 27 left
Number given to sister=9
Total number kept by Pat = 27-9 = 18

Not sure how to do the work, I did it in my head but he has 18 marbles. He started out with 54 half of that is 27. He gave one third to his sister which is nine. 27 - 9 = 18

9/(1/3)=27 after giving half to his friend

27/(1/2)=54 to start

54 - 27 (to friend) - 9 (to sister) = 18 remaining

Let x denote the amount of marbles she has.
She gave 1/2 of it.
So she has (x/2) marbles left.
She gave 1/3 of the remaining to her sister.
(1/3)(x/2)=9
x/6=9
x=6 X 9
x=54
Pat has 54 marbles

You need to pay attention in class. If you don't understand this, tell your teacher so she can arrange for tutoring. You need to do your own homework. This is in no way helping you to prepare for the state test in the spring.
