What a wonderful question--I wish I knew the answer. From my personal experience, the key is truly convincing yourself that these thoughts are undesirable. Then, once you know what causes them, you can start avoiding situations and actions that lead to these emotions.
Experience and rational thought are key to truly convincing yourself that something is harmful and that it should be avoided. If you continue to feel a certain way, then you either believe that it's impossible or that it's undesirable to stop feeling that way.
And experience is more important than rational thought, because there's always a difference between theories and practical reality.

The thing is only the individual can really make the change to overcome undesirable emotions. But a bit of support goes along way if they want it.
It starts with changing the way one thinks about things.
Start to try and make changes for the better, when upset think is it really that bad that I'm thinking this way.. will it be this bad tomorrow? the next day?? it's hard if your not used to it but it will get easier.

If it's something like sadness or loneliness, hang out with funny people or watch some comedies you absolutely love. That's something you will be able to overcome pretty quickly.
Anger is a different story. Find a way to (safely) vent. Even if it means telling off the assh0le who cut you in line at the supermarket. If it's really bad, get some help to get it under control. I've had to do that, because I used to have these horrible, violent rages and totally terrify my parents. The same applies to anxiety, only you get panic attacks if you don't address the issue.
Jealousy? Well, that's something *you* need to get over, because you don't own anyone. Mmk?

ill just throw a bunch of ideas out there:
::you need to get better at realizing when an emotion is undesirable or getting a better feel for when the emotions are coming so you can stop them before they start
::clear your mind when you feel that way. large focus on your breathing . it takes your mind out of your head and attention goes towards your body
::think of happy thoughts intensely to overcome them
::breathe slowly and count backwards from 100 by three's, its tough to think anything but that cuz its mentally challenging.
::write whatever the bad thing on an index card and then on the black side of the card write a good thing.
hope these help. good luck

have you noticed that when we experience a trauma in our childhood we tend to re-create that experience, or "emotional sequence" over and over. Different time and circumstances but same feelings. This is an unconscious part of us helping us see that this is a wound to be given attention. There are two things that stop the cycle, facing the emotion directly, go find a way to experience it with all of its horrors (safely) or contemplate it as a lesson to learn...sometimes it takes years to fully do away with it, usually we just chip away at it a little at a time......This also reminds me of a poet that said "your joy is under your sadness"

That's hard to answer since I don't know what kind of emotions these are. I guess overall you just have to discipline yourself to stop when you start to have these emotions.
