okay. i am now pregnant with my 2nd son (he's due in about a month) and my 1st son just turned 1 on the 29 of October. After i have this child i am going to be going on some type of birth control (i have never been on any before). i have always heard that the pill is the most effective, but it just isn't for me. i cant even remember my name somedays, much less remember to take a pill everyday. what are some other means of birth control that would be good for a mother of 2 that cant remember to take the pill. i am also scared b/c i am always hearing stories on T.V. about like the ring thing and the patch and the shot...that they can cause severe side effects. i do smoke, and i also hear on every commercial that you shouldn't smoke when on birth control....so i guess what i am asking is...is there any birth control out there that wont kill me if i smoke and that i dont have to take everyday. or are condoms just my best bet...that way i only have to remember when its NEEDED! thanks!!!

The shot!!! I love the shot! I only have to remember it every three months and after a year I was period and cramp free!! It is extremely effective! I can not take hormone based birth control so this really was the only option other than condoms. Since my fiance does not like to wear condoms, this was my only option. I was in your boat once upon a time. My older is son is going to be 3 in March and my younger son is going to be 2 in June!

Hey, wow, you sound so much like me! I am a year younger than you but I went through pretty much the same thing. First off, your not pregnant! Secondly I admire you and your boyfriend for your goals and for your wisdom after the fact. Now down to your question, your symptoms seem to be from the birth control. Some people actually have minor allergies to birth controls and some people, like you and me, don't react well to certain ones. I don't know if your doctor told you what is in a birth control pill but its pretty wild, and its understandable for some bodies to react in a negative way towards them. Whenever I first got on birth control, shortly after I lost my virginity, I was having cramps, nausea, headaches, very very very HOT flashes, and exhaustion. My new husband was very worried about me and we thought maybe I could be pregnant. After talking to my uncle who is a doctor, and my mom who went through this same thing, we realized I just couldn't handle that birth control. I tried two more and went through the same thing again. My doctors and I agreed that birth control wasn't an option for me, so my husband and I have to use methods such as condoms and avoiding sex during my ovulation (which is hard because like you, I have irregular periods). The doctors agreed that after I have my first child, my body should even out and I will get a regular period, and at that point I'll be able to try birth control again. So all that to say, if the side effects of your birth control continue, ask your doctor to try you on something else with a lower dose. Good luck in school and with your boyfriend, and sorry for the looong explanation! Shirley

Condoms are a very good bet. Use them with spermicidal foam and they'll be even better. But you've got to USE THEM. Maybe it was just my miserable choices, but most men I've been with have whined until I gave in and said they didn't have to wear them (lucky I'm not dead with AIDS now!).

Another one you use only when you need it with almost no side effects is the diaphragm. You can use it WITH the condom for double protection. But if you are tempted to give in to a man's whining, at least you'll still have pregnancy protection. But you can still get sexually transmitted infections. But only condoms will protect you from those. Or abstinence. That will protect you too.

Please, don't ever use withdrawal. It's not birth control, it won't work, and you'll wind up with half a dozen kids in as many years.

If you are married talk to your husband about a vacetomy are you could consider one also. The man is easier to reverse though. Abstinence in the best form though not realistic in today's society. As for pills and shots I would not be much help since I am a man but I know my wife had to try about 4 different kinds before shw found the one that worked best with her body chemistry.

I have been using the nuva ring for over a year now and love it. I too am forgetful and missed pills sometimes... so jumped when I heard about the ring. It is just a rubber ring that releases hormones over time like the pill. It is inserted into the vagina and stays there for 3 weeks. you take it out after the third week so that you get your period as usual, and put a new one in a week later. As for the smoking, it does increase your chances to get a blood clot... but i have had no issues with it.

If you're looking for some long term birth control, you may want to consider IUDs, available in both hormonal and non-hormonal varieties, as well as other non-hormonal methods. You can read more about your options here (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Non-Hormonal_Birth_Control).

Also, hormonal birth control isn't totally out of the question, particularly not if you only choose progesterone only methods, which you can read more about here (http://www.vaginapagina.com/index.php?title=Hormonal_Birth_Control#What_are_the_different_types_of_HBC.3F). However, your best bet is to become informed and to discuss both the benefits and risks of each method with a health care professional.

Good luck!

If you are not planning to have any more children, i suggest you go for the ''female sterilisation'' after giving birth to your 2nd son.
It is a permanent contraceptive method.

Since you smoke, the safest one for you would be condoms.
