A test was done recently at http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82. They tested 58 anti-virus apps, both free and paid. Here is where the free ones scored in virus detection rates.

Please notice that the highly recommended, AVG, is in fact, junk!

2. Active Virus Shield by AOL version 6.0.0.299 - 99.62%

7. BitDefender freeware version 8.0.202 - 95.57% (on demand only, No real time scanner)

11. AntiVir Classic version 7.01.01.02 - 94.26%

17. Avast freeware version 4.7.871 - 87.46%

24. AVG freeware version 7.1.405 - 82.82%

40. ClamWin version 0.88.4 - 51.23% (on demand only, No real time scanner)

46. Comodo version 1.0.0.4 - 41.02%

well your question has already been answered! AVG is the best free online Anti-virus software, I had been using it for more than four years now, and I ahd checked most of the freely available ones, and continued with AVG you can understand the reason!

You should try F-Prot Antivirus. You may download it at www.f-prot.com for 30 days free trial! and it really works! AVG detected a virus, but only f-prot(compared to all antivirus) deleted the virus in System Restore and it even deletes viruses in games, hidden files, and locked files. no need for unlocker!
