Nursing can make you feel more tired. Especially if your aren't taking a good muliltvitamin with iron or if you aren't taking in enough calories. It's a lot of work for your body to make milk that supplies your baby with all the nutrients he needs. Which is why it's very important to take vitamins and take in the calories recommended for nursing moms. Taking care of your son also means taking care of yourself! Make sure you nap when he naps. Having a baby is exhausting in itself and then keeping up with him wears you down as well.
With my first child I wasn't taking in enough calories while nursing. And I got really worn down and anemic. With the next 3 I did a better job and didn't get as tired. But it really does take awhile to recover just from pregnancy and childbirth, I think it takes a year really.
I wish you all the best, you may want to see your doctor and have him test your iron levels to insure that you aren' anemic.

Yes, nursing can leave you feeling completely wiped out. Most doctors have you stay on vitamins while nursing. And get lots of rest. Take a nap when the baby sleeps. If you have other young kids that don't nap try and arrange a Mothers helper to come in for an hour or so during the day so you can nap. Take care of yourself so you have the energy to take care of your baby. Lots of luck and congrats!

The only reason that you might be tired is probably that you are not eating healty or enough. Remember that you are sharing your nurishment with the baby so you have to eat enough. Make sure you rest!! Also you might want to talk to your doctor about getting on some multivitamins or just some iron pills to increase your energy. Another thing you can do is try to eat something just before feeding your son. Rest assure it will get better. I breast fed my son until he was a year so I am talking from experience so hang in there.

:-) I agree with previous posters, just having a baby can be tiring! However i would also look into how many calories you are eating. Breastfeeding DOES use up a lot of calories, which are energy. Check out the source below for more information. There are also vitamins and herbs that you can take to help, but I would talk with a naturopath or lactation consultant before taking anything.

Of course nursing makes you tired when you're doing it, but once you've stopped, it shouldn't have any bearing. It'll just be the baby taking it out of you - I thought things would be better once my baby was crawling, but now I'm even more knackered!!! I'm just trying to enjoy as much as I can, 'cos they don't stay little for long, and they're so gorgeous - just get as much help as you can from family and friends and hang in there.

Nursing is tiring work because your son is taking quite a bit of your nutrition, but not just that, simply taking care of a baby is hard work.

Motherhood makes you tired, nursing or not! I would say, have some blood tests done, you want to check your iron, sugars and thyroid. I went undiagnosed for years with hypothyroid because I thought being tired was normal for mothers :)

My cousin had a baby 3 weeks ago, and whenever she nurses him, it's like she has taken a sedative, she becomes very drowsy and her talking slurs. When she's not nursing, she's fine.
