They are the same thing, it only depends on if you agree with them or not;
YES = freedom fighter
NO = terrorist
Example: The Sons of Liberty were considered freedom fighters in the British Colonies, but their actions were considered terrorist by England.

Consider Iraq. It is not a matter of who you side with, it is a matter of distinct differences in the definition.
We have given the people of Iraq the opportunity to form a government that answers to the people instead of the other way around. A government with a constitution that guarantees their rights and freedoms. The Iraqis who support this agenda are freedom fighters - quite simply, they are fighting for their freedom from years of fear and oppression from a ruthless dictator.
The small percentage of Islamic radicals who fight to prevent this are terrorists. Their objectives are clear - they fully intend to kill all infidels and anyone else who question their beliefs. They use tactics of terror and murder and they target innocent men, women and children to further their demented agenda of a one world government under Islamic law - without the infidels, of course.
There is no valid comparison what so ever. The objectives of both the terrorists and the freedom fighters are clear - and it is also clear that one is admirable and the other is purely evil.

Since when does a person fighting for freedom have to kill? Terrorists have no concern for human life, a freedom fighter does. Someone who cares that people have their freedoms doesn't want to kill anyone. Freedom fighters will stand up for their freedom and protect their right to be free, that does not make them a cowardly terrorist. A terrorist is a murderer who wants things their way and only theirs. A true freedom fighter does not attack but will defend. Anything else would be an act of terrorism.

I draw the line when innocent civilians are intentionally targeted. The early Patriots never intentionally targeted innocent civilians unless they were actively assisting the Crown. The French never attacked civilians unless they were actively assisting Vichy. The PLO, Hamas, al-Queda, et al seldom engage troops and prefer to attack civilians. And terrorists seldom fight for freedom--if anything, they fight against freedom.
Do you see the difference? That's why I don't accept the cliche, "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter."

George Washington, William Wallace and any who fight against tyranny are freedom fighters. Terrorists use extreme violence against "soft" targets i.e. buses, public gatherings, children and those who are unable or unprepared to defend themselves to advance fear into those who oppose them Murder is the modis operendi of the terrorist. Freedom fighters may result to war but usually mix battle with efforts to change political atmosphere to the benefit of the people. Contrary to popular belief, Che Guevera was a ruthless terrorist.

Freedom fighters wanted to get independence for their land or people and they fight in battlefield observing rules of war.
Terrorists fight discreetly by sowing violence among the civilians and have no respect for the rules of war.
