Many people have lost jobs because industry has moved out of the USA. What can be done to re-employ these people and get them working again? What kind of work would you suggest?

President Bush has been dropping the unemployment rate with his new awesome minimum wage jobs. I'm with Rosanne bar. We need to create a maximum wage, I think that will create more job opportunities. Huge corporations will stop exporting jobs because the cheaper labor in other countries won't help them see more profit. They'll keep the jobs here and maybe pay decent wages. I'm talking 100 mill a year. I think that's plenty for one person.

I think your question is the very problem - PEOPLE themselves need to re-educate themselves, re-tool themselves, and re-enter the workforce. Honestly, manufacturing has been going away for 20 years, and many just stuck their heads in the sand hoping it wouldn't happen to them. Others took advantage of corporate paid training in computers and other fields, and were able to keep a job.

Industry has moved out of the US because it moves to the lowest cost provider. Thus, the US has to show that they can either be the lowest cost provider, or provide such high quality as to be worth the premium (which actually makes them the low cost provider in the long run).

The problem is that there are many high paid, low skilled jobs in factories, and if you've been making $100k putting brake shoes on an assembly line, it's going to be hard to knuckle back and make $40k a year as a starter computer programmer (after going to 2 years of night school). At my local Home Depot, there are design engineers working there for $12 / an hour, a far cry from their old salaries. But many "engineers" didn't even have degrees, they used to be draftsmen and never went back to college.

What are people good at? Service industries, things where a local presence help (aka, lawn services, hairdresser, financial counselor, attorney, real estate). Build those industries up, retail will follow.

Industry moves. No jobs in Michigan, go rebuild New Orleans or work coal in Wyoming. Learn to do a trade that no one else can do, no one else is willing to do, or both. Job markets have always changed, it is just recently that people felt themselves to have the God given right to be exempt from the inconvenience of changing to meet the opportunity.
