It's impossible to not care what other people think. We are a social species and we need other people to be content. Now there are varying degrees of this, and there are people who are confident enough to be themselves and let most of what other people say about them slough off. But everybody is affected by what other people think to some degree.
What you said about goths reminds me of one of my favourite episodes of South park where Stan becomes a goth and the goth kids tell him "if you want to be a non-conformist all you need to do is dress just like us and listen to the same music we do."

I also believe that everyone cares what others think of them, but it does change as you grow up. Now at 30 I really don't care what a stranger thinks as much as I do a good friend or a love one. At 18 I cared what anyone thought. There are people who you learn to respect and respect their ideas, beliefs, etc and what they think of you are the only opinions you should give any thought to. If a stranger judges you from the outside why should you care.

That is a WONDERFUL question. And yes, i agree. I admit I care what others think. I don't do things because of others, but when i do something of course i think about what they'll say. Or how they'll react. It's only human!
If you're emo or something and you're saying "i dont care what they think"... you're going so over the top so that people can see that you dont care. SO yep. I agree.

If certain people really believed that they truly didn't care about the thoughts of others, then they certainly wouldn't be living in a social contract with society. In that case, they wouldn't care about what their parents tell them, what their friends say to them, what potential employers think of them during an interview, etc.
The moral of the story is... when some goth kid dressed in black tells you he doesn't care what people think of him and how "individualistic" he is, pat him on the head condescendingly and then nod and smile.

Of course, I and most of people out there care about what other people think about them.
But most of us have self_control, we don't let those things from people's mouth effect our priceless lives.
I do take positive comments to help make myself better.
Those negative comments, if I learn to ignore them, they'll eventually die by time.

I disagree. You can be curious about what people have to say without really caring one way or the other.

I think you're right. I believe people who say they don't care what anyone thinks are probably trying to cover how truly sensitive they are.

Its human nature to care to a degree what others think of you,but you shouldn't lose any sleep over it.
