do robins migrate in winter? i never see them leave, like you do geese, but i always notice when they're back

Most of them do. there may be a few hangers on if there is enough food around. Thats why they signal the start of spring.

All depends on where you are and availability of food. Tough a good portion of the population may migrate south and in the most northern range this may be all, but in many places they will stay especially if there was an abundant small fruit production during the year, in effect food availailability is often the limiting factor. People usually notice them more in the spring because there are more robins, males are trying to establish territories and with no snow cover they can forrage on the ground.

The population of robins shifts southwards in winter. The summer range goes north of the Arctic Circle. I know because I've been north of the Arctic Circle and I saw a robin. That was in June. Most of the United States is within the overlap of the summer and winter range. Does that mean the robins you see in winter are different individuals from the robins you see in summer? It's hard to say because they all look the same. But if you see robins year-round, chances are a lot of the robins you see in winter will head north in the spring.

Robins range year round in MOST of the U.S., but many will move to the N. part of the U.S. and up into Canada and Alaska to breed in the spring, and move down south into Baja and Mexico in the winter.
