Flip the collar over. Leading up to the points of the collar should be a small stitched channel where the collar stay slides in. This keeps the points of the collar stiff and straight without curling.
Remove them before you do the wash.

What a fantastic gift. Did you have them monogrammed?
On the underside of the collar there should be a place where you can insert the stays - they go into the points of the collar.
Most inexpensive shirts will not work with collar stays, so it has to be a fairly pricey shirt to use the stays.

they don't work in all collars
turn the colar over, there should be a long skinney pocket on the back of each tab
if the collar is button down, they don't take collar stays
