Representative government generally refers to systems where voters (the principal) elect elites (the agents) to create policy on their behalf. Given the vast territory and population covered by the modern nation-state, the term representative government has become synonomous with democracy (although representation was not fundamentally a part of direct democracy in ancient Athens). When we talk about accurate representation, we're usually referring to two things:
1) Descriptive Representation (see Pitkin 1991) - where the elected body reflects some a priori defined attribute of the constituency such as gender or race. For example, an African American representing an African American community would be descriptively accurate. Conversely, governments tend not be representative of women.
2) Policy Representation (see McDonald and Budge 2005; Powell 2006) - where the elected body holds the same policy interests as the voters. For example, if a white candidate has an African American constituency and does pursue their interests, this would be accurate policy representation but not necessarily accurate descriptive representation.

Representative government is one in which the people as a whole nation choose some person or party that represents what (in most cases) the majority believe to be true and just, and are governed by that person/party.
