I just found out I was pregnant. The first day of my last period was August 18th, which means my due date should be May 29th. When I found out 2 weeks ago they said by the ultrasound that I was only 7 weeks (the had to do an internal ultrasound, couldnt see in external) which put my due date at June 20th. When I asked the dr. about why there was such a gap between my date and hers she said I should have had a period in the first week of September, 2 weeks after I had one, but that I just missed it. I want to ask for another U/S just to be sure but since I have State Medicaid will they do that? I don't want to seem rude but I just dont think its right because it doesnt add up. What would you do in my position?

The ultra sound is more accurate than going by your last period. When you get a due date by using the date of your last period, they assume you ovualted 12-14 days after that date and estimate the due date from that. That's just averages. Not every woman ovulates exactly 14 days after their period, just as not every woman has a 28 day cycle. Now with ultra sounds, they can judge by the weight of the fetus and the growth of the organs how far along you are. Its more of an exact science compared to the estimating of ovulation, compounded by the error factor of some women mistaking the date of their last period. You will go for monthly check ups and they will measure your belly and listen to the fetal heartbeat. By 20 weeks you will have another ultrasound (external) and your due date will be more accurate. It may be the same or you may "move up" or "go back" a week or 2. The discrepancy of your date and your doctor's date is not so large that you can't wait to see what unfolds during your monthly checkups. In addition, if you were 3 months pregnant like you thought, you probably would've gotten an image with an external ultrasound. You're probably not as far along as you thought, that's why they had to do it internally.
Good luck and congratulations on baby to be!

Dr's offices can do other ultrasounds other than the "scheduled" ultrasound. And not "report" it. I had 5-6 ultrasounds each time (3) and only one counted on my insurance. I am not on Medicaid, but my insurance would only pay for one. I would actually ask your DR if that first u/s counted as the ONE ultrasound because there is an ultrasound--routine---that can only be done around 20 wks to measure bones...and such, and that also will adjust any due date discrepancies. BUT--since there is such a big gap in dates...more than a week...then your DR has to be correct. I know the little peanut is small, but they really truly see this all the time. They would know the difference between a 7 wks embryo and an 10-11 wk embryo. Also, the fact that the external wasn't picking up the baby is another big clue your Dr is right. And after 9 wks, you can HEAR the heartbeat with a doppler. So, it may have been just been a flukey thing with your period or when you ovulated...etc. Play around with this site....see if you can pinpoint or recall conception. http://www.intmed.mcw.edu/clincalc/pregnancy.html If you still need more proof---just talk to you DR. Good luck--and congrats.

I know that the due date thing is confusing.. I two am pregnant (26 week almost 27 on sunday).. I have State medicaid too.. Ive had 3 ultrasounds... One at 6weeks 5days. Second one at 20 weeks and 3days and the third one 21 weeks and 5 days... They also coverd 3D ultrasounds so far 2 of the 3 where 3D and i have another one coming when im 36 weeks... When we first found out i didnt know my due date because the Ogyn wouldnt give me one till the first u/s... I would ask for another or go see a different Obgyn if you dont feel right about it... You should be able to ask for another.... It wouldnt hurt too... I wouldnt worry about it till you talk to you doc or switch to a different one..

When you are pregnant and have a medical card (from the state) you can go to what ever doctor you want. If you do not trust this doctor go to someone else. They should want to do another unltrsound cause they love billing those medical cards like crazy and getting money for it.

If your last period was in august then you would be further along than 7 weeks.
But going by what you typed i found this:

Estimated date of conception:Friday, September 1, 2006
End of 1st trimester (12 weeks): Friday, November 10, 2006
End of 2nd trimester (27 weeks): Friday, February 23, 2007
Estimated Due Date: May 25, 2007

Good luck and Congrats

well for the women out there expectin medicare to pay for their pregnancies and such where do you think THAT money is coming from??? Tax payers that's who and just because a person wants to know the sex of the child or doesnt want to wait until their doctor can be a bit more specific when it comes to a due date, that's too bad. Once you get further along in your pregnancy they will be able to measure your uterus by just feeling the top or fundus and estimate how far along you are. All of this peeking inside to look at your baby is just "estimation" of due date anyway. Statistics are low when it comes to actually having your child on the given due date. Hang in there

The ultrasound should be adaquate ( dating of gestation is best when done prior to 12 weeks, after that the dating becomes more blurry), and no Medicde will not pay for any unnecisarry ultrasounds. Just talk to your OB at your next visit, make sure that if you go into labor in May that they won't try & stop it! If they say they will, find a new OB. If you really want a new ultasound, go to a new OB

I would say absolutely have a second opinion if you want. There is a pretty big difference between seven weeks and eleven weeks, and even a novice should be able to tell the difference. The way that they determine how far along you are is by measuring the baby from the crown of his head to his rump. At seven weeks, your baby is less than half an inch in length, as compared to an inch and a half at eleven weeks.

the only problem with state Medicaid is that they will only cover ultrasounds and that's all. i am on Medicaid also i am 35.5 weeks and have had four ultrasounds and i have to pay for the last two and the last one the Dr. gives me out of pocket. which isn't fair when they are done as an emergency procedure

At your stage in pregnancy they are pretty much guessing they usually add 2 weeks at the beginning of your pregnancy and 2 weeks at the end so they are almost always out from your dates. I wouldn't worry about it these things change a couple of times wait till your next scan it will be different again. Mum of four!! Survivor of many wrong guesses !!!
