My Whirlpool had the exact same issue yesterday and as some of the others mentioned the lid switch was that stopped the machine. If you don't here a clicking noise when closing the lid then you can pretty much assume that is the cause in your case as well.
THIS IS JUST A TEMPORARY FIX. ONLY DO THIS ON YOUR OWN RISK ONLY. THE SWITCH IS A SAFETY DEVICE.
Here is what I have done:
1. First of all UNPLUGGED the washer.
2. I have removed the 2 screws holding the switch and removed the switch.
3. I cut the 2 gray wires going to the switch.
4. I have connected the 2 wires and then I have insulated the wires.
5. I made sure to hide it where the drum can touch it while spinning.
6. Finished the rest of the laundry so my family can enjoy the luxury of clean clothes.
7. Ordered the replacement lid switch from eBay for $15 so I can fix the issue properly next week.

Could also be something as simple as the lid switch. A wash machine wont spin with the lid open. If it twists, churns and fills, then there is nothing wrong with the motor or the pump.
Either way you need an appliance repairman to look at it. Just dont be taken if they say it needs a new motor, clutch or any other $$$ item. Better to just get a new machineor find an honest repairman.

You most likely have a bad motor coupling. It would be in your best interest to call for a repairman. Watch closely how it is done and you may be able to do the repair when it happens again or decide you would rather have someone else do it.

Sounds like you have a bad lid switch. Slowly raise and lower the lid. You should hear an audible click noise. If you dont hear the click your lid switch is bad. Now if you want to replace it your next question will be..."How do i take my Whirlpool washer apart". I'll be watching. :)

The problem is that you have a bad lid switch... The indication that it leaves half the water in the tub indicates this... This is a very simple repair...
Go to this web site and it will show you how to remove the cabinet... Underneathe the cabinet you will see, and be able to replace the lid switch...

It is probably your lid switch. This is an easy fix and wont cost that much, alot less than calling a service repair person.Should only take 20-30 minutes from start to finish.

If you have a filter, then check it. This sort of problem commonly occurs when the filter is full of fluff (etc) - the water can't drain out quickly enough, and the machine can't spin when it's still full of water.

It needs a new drive belt, Some models are easily replaced some are not. You may need a repairman but you can look at it first to decide if you want to attempt it alone

Definitely not a do-it-yourself and may not be repairable. How old is the washer? Call a professional repair place.

by your question I would call for help. If it is over 5 years old I would look at getting a new one with a warranty.
