The pie pan, magnet and coil are used to make the speaker. The sand was to show that the speaker could form patterns, just like a regular speaker could.

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, he didn't make a speaker - he just put the pie pan and sand on top of the speaker. At different frequencies, patterns will form in the sand due to the vibrations. But you need a speaker already.

We do that experiment in physics labs.
