Paul, it is exactly for the same reason as the United states. No difference. America is a land of so many countries` people, Europe, africa, South Americas. Yet they chose to communicate and grow with one language that united them all. They succeeded in this.

In India , too, the country consciously chose to communicate in one language , English which is now the world language. But the people of India still think, dream and speak their respective languages ( called mother tongue) at home and in the society. It is not uncommon to see that a child , usually learns minimum of 3 languages in school.. English, a Lingua Franca ( Hindi) and the mother tongue. . Later , in their working life they pick up one or two other languages too. Amazing.

Can you imagine a kid listening to your English question , translate it into native language instantly in brain, think of an answer in native language and instantly translate it mentally in English and answer you in english? This is what is happeneing actually.

If you have the language selector at English, then you should see English questions in any country. Any nation that was part of the Empire, including the USA, will have had a long enough exposure to English that some of its people will still speak the language. Plus, many nations learn English because it is such a predominant language in business and technology.

Hey and i thought you Americans had the answers to everything... apparently not... besides being a very stupid question, thats also a very racist question...
What if you were to go to France and speak French there and a local says to you .. "hey you speak french... how disappointing... i was looking forward to hours of poking fun at you while you desperately move your hands about and yell in gibberish to make me understand you."
So there you go Mr.America wake up and look around you abit, also read a bit of history while your at it...
Also YD i don't think each and every indian has to translate every thing in his language and vice versa when dealing with English, it almost comes naturally to a wide range of public now...
