Okay folks... take this from a woman who was raised on a working cattle ranch in West Texas... Cow Tipping is just like Snipe Hunting. It was invented by BOYS to get the GIRLS out in the country, on a dark road so they could schmooch. Cows don't sleep THAT soundly when they are standing up , they doze or rest and wouldn't fall over anyway. They sleep lying down. Just like the Sniped do.

I have never done it but I do know how it is done. A group of teenagers(approx. 6-8) go out to a farm at night, find a cow that is sleeping(they usually sleep standing up), sneak up on it, and push it over. Apparently his works best if you get a running start but be careful or you will slip and fall in cow poop. This is evidently highly entertaining and beyond funny and is intensified if one is intoxicated. I have been told it is very hard to actually tip them over and the tippers are rarely successful. This is probably due to the fact that the cows center of gravity is different from ours and the weight of the cow. I don't personally know anyone who was successful at tipping a cow and I have never heard of a cow being hurt from someone tipping it. It does stand to reason however, that they could be hurt from this practice.

Update:
urban legend or not I do know people who have tried it. Unsuccessfully I might add

Cow tipping is a pastime allegedly common in rural areas, in which participants sneak up on an upright sleeping cow and then push it over for amusement. Some variants of this urban legend state that the cow is then unable to get up.

As long as ya don't hurt or kill or paralyze the animal it is not called animal cruelty, in which cow tipping does not hurt the cow. Is what many people think.

Cow tipping is when you go find a cow in a field, mostly at night when no one will see you and the cow is asleep, and push them over on their side. This COULD hurt the cow, if done, and it would be cruel. But it isn't!

Why? It can't be done! An awake cow would move if you tried to tip it, right? Well cows go to sleep lying down. So though it is a fun myth to tip a cow, it's not possible as an awake cow would not stand for being tipped over.

Hope this answers your question!

Cow tipping from what I've learned many years ago is when several persons sneak up on a sleeping cow and push it over on to its side . Now as to the poor thing getting hurt yes it can be hurt or seriously injured. My friend is a farmer and would like to unload some buck shot into some one who would tip over his cows. I have not done it as it is a childish prank .

Cow tipping is going into a field w/a cow sleeping and sneaking up on it and pushing it over. It is considered tormenting the animal but that is dependant on who you ask and who is doing the cow tipping.

Ha ha, ihav5katz, I'd forgotten all about snipe hunting! I fell for that a time or two when I was younger.

Cows can't really be tipped. This, too, comes from "experience." Not from trying to tip cows, but from many, many evenings of checking on the cows. They sleep lying down. Can't sneak up on 'em, either.

Good question, brought back lots of countrytime memories!
