Synopsis
Staring at the Sun | Air Date: 11/16/2006
Meredith goes to visit her mother, and finds she hasn't been eating. Richard shows up and brings her a box of chocolates, because he knows she hasn't been eating regular food.
Her announcement to the other interns that she's now "bright and shiny" because of getting back together with Derek takes a bit of a setback when she finds out that George's dad is in the hospital. He passed out and broke his clavicle in a fall.
When George and Bailey check on Mr. O'Malley, Callie is in the room, having popped his bone back into place. George's brothers are also there and they won't take George's word for anything, but only listen to Bailey. Bailey forbids George from working on his own father's case. She tells him he can pick one of the other interns for the case, and he picks Cristina.
When George goes to find Cristina, he observes her performing a complicated procedure by herself as Burke looks on. Later, she insists she merely assisted. He tells her he saw Burke having a hand spasm but she brushes off his concerns. He asks Burke if he's doing okay and Burke tells him everything is fine.
Callie and George's brothers are debating the merits of various cars when George checks back in on his father and he tells her he can handle his family on his own.
George has trouble breaking the diagnosis to his father, so Cristina tells him he has cancer in his esophagus and stomach and that he needs surgery to remove it.
George confides to Izzie and Meredith that he can't handle the news, or the way his brothers are treating him, or that Callie slept with Mark. He also says he's been worried about Burke.
A scan reveals that Mr. O'Malley needs an aortic valve replacement before he can undergo the cancer surgery. George tells Cristina he wants Burke to do it but demands to know if Burke is really okay. She says he is, but he knows she's lying.
George's brothers argue with him when he tells them they need to do the heart surgery before the cancer surgery. Callie steps in and compares their dad to a vintage car, talking engines instead of hearts, and they suddenly get it.
Addison is surprised that Derek is being so friendly. Because they're getting along so well, she asks him if he'll come talk to Richard with her because she thinks he's depressed. He says Adele wants him to step down as Chief of Surgery. Instead of listening to what he's saying, they're soon bickering about their own issues.
Richard calls Meredith in to tell her that he can't keep seeing her mother anymore since he's going to try to make his marriage work. He tells her that she's an extraordinary woman who worked very hard and sacrificed a lot.
Bailey assigns Izzie to shadow Alex and reminds her of the rules of her probation, which includes no talking to or touching patients. Alex is still assisting Mark, who tells him and Izzie to pick up his dry cleaning and to get him a sandwich. Addison finds out and and reminds him that Seattle Grace is a teaching hospital. So he brings them in to see Frank, a pec-implant surgery patient who needs to be monitored after some swelling.
Frank, who refers to himself in the third person, says he got the implants because his girlfriend started seeing a physical trainer. He invites Izzie to feel the implants. She does and then he says she should compare them to real ones. Mark walks in to find her with one hand on Frank's chest and one on Alex's and sighs in disgust, "This is why I don't work with interns."
To the annoyance of the other interns, Alex and Izzie start talking about themselves in the third person. Frank senses the "vibes" between Alex and Izzie and tells him to go for her, even though Alex says it's complicated. To make a grand gesture like Frank did, he lets Izzie take out Frank's drainage tube. Izzie is so happy after the procedure, Alex goes in for a kiss. She freezes and tells him she can't.
They both end up at Joe's, where she says she didn't know that he still felt that way about her. But she asks, "Can Izzie buy Alex a drink?" A little girl, Mia Hanson, is brought in after being run over with an SUV by her devoted nanny, Anna. Mrs. Hanson, a high-powered attorney, and her husband argue who's to blame for the accident. When Anna says she just didn't see Mia in the SUV's blind spot, Mrs. Hanson fires her. Mia won't stay still during a head scan and her mother's attempts to soothe her don't work. "I want Anna," she keeps saying.
Bailey and Meredith operate on Mia and Meredith thinks that the Hansons are lousy parents because they don't know their child's blood type or her favorite song, the way the nanny does. Bailey tells her that all parents just do the best they can.
After the surgery, they tell her Mia is doing fine, but keeps asking for Anna. Mrs. Hanson says she that she's good at her job, but not at the "mom stuff." So they bring Anna back.
Miranda sees Anna singing to Mia and calls home and insists her husband wake the baby up so she can sing to him over the phone.
Meredith tells her mother Richard isn't coming to visit anymore and, in her Alzheimer's confusion, laments having to raise her daughter alone. Meredith tells her she did the best she could.
Meredith and Derek decide that they can't keep up "bright and shiny" but that just being together is enough.

ABC is not a cable channel. As long as you have a television, you should be able to pick up the station with an external antenna.

It starts of with Derek and Meredith getting all clean an squeeky in her bath tub. They want to take it slow but that's not likely.
In the locker room, Meredith tells all her friend that she is no longer dark and twisty but squeaky and clean. George is preoccupied with his father's chart which Bailey is looking for.His father was supposed to have been admitted vor an injured clavicle.
At the desk, it is back to business. Bailey assigns Alex to Stone and Izzie to Alex, same rules as last week she can't talk to anybody. Meredith is assigned to Derek. George is assigned to nobody because his father is in the hospital and that will distract him.
From the emergency room a little girl is being brought in. She ahs been run over by her nanny and has a head trauma. that makes her Derek's patient. He examines her brain while Bailey and Meredith examine her other injuries. The mother arrives and tells the nanny to leave. The father arrives and finds out the mother should have been watching the girl when the nany backed over her in the minivan. Bailey yells at all of them about blind spots in minivans. Still the nanny has to leave at the mother's request. The girl becomes upset because the nanny has been the one raising her.
Meanwhile Izzie and Alex meet up with Stone who send them out to get his lunch and his drycleaning. Mark can't resist busting Izzie's chops a little as well.
George is pestering Bailey about doing his father's endoscopy. Bailey gives him a break and tells him no but he can pick the intern to do the procedure. He goes looking for Christina, who he finds with Burke doing a procedurethat Burke should not be letting her do. Geoge's mind is wondering why Burke is letting her do this. He talks to both of them about Christina and the Endoscopy. She say no because of Burke's schedule. Burke says yes because it is George.
At the mental hospital, Meredith is talking to her mother about how her mother has not been eating. Ellis tells her that she is too busy and has two surgeries to prepare for. Richard shows up with something for Ellis to eat and she changes her tune. The Chief and Meredith have a small difficulty talking in fornt of Ellis but they manage to et to the point that Meredith tells Richard that she is going and he should stay.
Back at the Hospital Derek is chatting with Addison about how Squeaky and Clean he will be and how they should have no problem working together.
George is going to see his father and finds Callie getting along with his brothers picking a car in their stupid little game, and telling them about how tough George was when she popped his shoulder back in in the ER. George asks Calleie to step out and tells her she doesn't have to do that especially since she dumped him.
George has convinced Christine to do the endoscopy. From the way it sounds she is assisting Richard with it. Unfortunately the news is not good.
Addison is there as Alex and Izzie return with Mark's stuff and chastises him for not teaching them. She also tells the chief the same thing.
mark takes Izzie and Alex to a postsurgical patient and giving them a chance to say a couple of words assgns them to watch the man's drainage tube to see when and if it needs to be taken out.
Back with the little girl, Bailey has had to operate to repair the damage to the girl's body. Meredith assists. Meredith is digusted with the way the little girl's mother spends so much time at work and so little time caring for her daughter. Meredith tells Bailey that mothers should have to choose between work and children. Bailey takes it personally being as she has a child of her own.
Christina tells George the results of the endosopy and as the ar waiting for Dr. Weber, George's dad wants to know what George knows. Christina winds up telling him that he has esophogeal cancer and that he needs surgery and radiation therapy.
Back with Alex and Izzie they are meeting with the patient Frank who talks about himself in the third person and says that Frank had peck surgery to save his new relationship. Frank gets Izzie to feel him up and Alex as well. Mark walks in and says "This is why I don't do interns.
George is still pestering Christina about Burke trying to find out what is wrong with his hand. Bailey gets an ear shot as Christina denies anything is wrong.
In Richard's Office Addison and Derek have cornered him to find out what is wrong with him. He tell s them that his wife wants him to step down as chief or lose his marriage. The two of them start bickering about what makes a relationship fall apart with seems to be one thing, another woman. Richard is getting the idea that they are not listening to him so he tries to end it quickly.
At lunch Izzie and Alex are talking in third person like Frank. George is telling everyon that Burke let Christina operate. Meredith calls Christina a *****. Christina denies everything. Meredith is begining to feel less squeaky. George is having trouble knowing what to do about Callie and Stone. He apparently never talked to Callie after the camping trip about that.
In recovery, the girl is still wanting her Nanny and the mother is still refusing to let her see her. What is worse the girl has developed a bleed in her skull and will need another surgery. Derek will have to operate.
Back with George's Father they are doing a sonogram to see if his heart can take the surgery and it can not. He has a valve problem that must be repaired first. Burke is who George wants to do the surgery. Christina is afraid because George's father has just told her that George thinks she is the best intern.
George upon learning of his father's condition has to question Burke's abilities again and Christina is not convincing him of her sincerity.
Alex when talking with Frank is told that he needs to make a big move on Izzie.
Derek performs the brain surgery on the little girl. Addison. CAllie and Bailey are up in the gallery watching and talking about working and the idea of having children. It is pointed out that Addison never got pregnant. Bailey is happy with her life and Callie is curious about what all it would take. The surgery is a success.
Back with Frank, the tube can be removed so Alex draws the curtain and gives Izzie the gloves. Frank is wondering what is going on and then he realizes and blurts out "This must be your big move." Izzie has no idea what Frank is talking about but only hesitates a second to pull the drainage tube.
The little girl goes to recovery but once more the only thing she wants is her nanny. Her mother bolts out of the room.
In George's father's room his brothers are still treating George with no respect as he tries to tell them that his father does in fact have cancer and a heart valve problem. They can not out what he is saying. Callie jumps in again and turns cancer into a fuel mixture metaphor and suddenly they understand it all.
Running down the stairway from removing the tube both Izzie and Alex are rejoicing. Izzie feels like a doctor again. Alex feels happy that she is happy. They get too close and they kiss. Izzie pulls away and says she is not ready.
Back in the little girls room singing is coming out of the room as the mother has returned with the nanny and Meredith and Bailey watch from a distance.
George is having to talk with his father about the surgery and the fact that he may want to wait on the heart surgery. The father wants to know why. George is trying to say it is better to be safe that sorry.
Richard tells Meredith that he can no longer see her mother if he wants to repair his relationship with his wife. She understands.
Bailey calls home and has the nanny wake up her son so that she can sing to him.
Meredith stops by the Sanitorium and talks to her mother about Richard and how he won't be stopping by. Ellis tells her how that will leave her to raise Meredith on her own. Meredith tell her how she did the best she could and that is all a mother can do.
At Joe's Pub Alex is sitting there as Izzie tells him that she didn't know he still had feelings for her like that. Alex apologizes for jumping the gun. Izzie says it is okay and buys him a drink for letting her do the procedure on Frank.
Back in the bathtub, Meredith and McDreamy admit that Squeaky may be a little to high to shoot for but it is nice to have someone to share a bathe with.
At Burkes place, Christina tells Burke as they lay in bed that George knows.
