Robin,

There is no hollywood movie that actually depicts complete historical events. Directors, writers, and producers all take liberties to juice up their film product to make it more interesting.

If best equals realistic, then the answer is the scene from Saving Private Ryan at the beginning of the movie when they land on the Normandy beaches. WW II veterans who actually lived through that landing are quoted as saying that that particular scene is the only accurate portrayal of what happened on that terrible day.

Most other movie scenes are dramatizations. When the guys who were there say a scene was real, then it must be the best.

Thanks for the fun question.

There was a movie called "Conspiracy" starring Kenneth Branaugh and Stanley Tucci which dealt with the Germans having a meeting in which they discussed several options on how to deal with the Jews. The whole movie took place primarily in the one room but was very well acted and certainly holds your interest.

Well that all depends on what you mean "best". Do you mean what the critics liked? How many Oscars the movie won? How the audiences liked it? Or are you interested in what individual people liked? So far the highest Oscars won for a historical movie was Ben Hur, personally I don't like it, I can't stand that Charlton Heston. The thing about Hollywood is that it always exaggerates history for its own means or for the American audiences. For therefore I can't really say what would be the "best" historical movie.

I found "The Affair of the Necklace" (Christopher Walken, Hillary Swank) to be a remarkably accurate account of Marie Antionette and that whole scandal

No offense, but none of the above, in my opinion.

I, as any others here will offer, can only offer an opinion, and given that thousands of movies have had impact on viewers, I have to say BEST is relative and subjective,,,However, if I had to pick one, I'd pick "Gettysburg."

I do notice though that you note only WAR type movies, and coincidently so did I. I suspect it's the nature of the "beast" to do so,,, but you know as well as I, that many other genres could be counted as enjoyable films, of equal impact.

I chose Gettysburg because it relates to self destruction, and hopeful ressurection of a species, and ideals, free of bias, prejudice, living one day in harmony, accepting and tolerating,,, Compromising and striving,,, unwilling to UN-evolve.

In my opinion, "The Longest Day". It was a movie full of stars and can never be made again with the payrolls of todays actors.

The Alamo, it gives a good look at the past history of Texas before it became a state.

Titanic? The only thing historically accurate was that the boat sank.

The Sands of Iwo Jima has been called the best historically accurate movie, but I haven't had a chance to see it yet.
