Visit Ha Noi if you can, its way more interesting than Saigon. Do not book with the major hotels as its a rip off, go into the old quarter and haggle. Good rooms easily found at less that $20 US.
Forget Lonely Planet, look for the "Rough Guide" version 4 or later if available. Lovely people and a very cheap holiday.

weather is always fine if you dress appropretly [ you can get what you need there]. hidden treasures... the people .. meet as many as you can wherever you go. writting phanetically; chow um[ greeting a man] chow ba [ greeting a older woman] cam un-thank you, sin loy - excuse me .. be polite be kind and you will be treated in same. most travelers i see use "lonley planet" as a guide book.... my favorite viet food is "muc chin" fried squid.. and "white rose" for an appetizer when you go to hoi an.
enjoi the night life but dont drink too much you gotta get up early at least a few times.. viet nam is most alive in the early am..4-5 am be on the streets and watch it come alive..have a cup of coffee [ cafe sua num] you can go back to bed later.now there's a hidden treasure. oh check out all the past questions on viet nam in this site.. plenty of great responces as to where to go what to see.

The weather will be hot,a little cooler in the north than the south.Lonely planet is a reasonable guide, but dont expect it to be accurate.I dont know your budget or time span, but try to avoid long distance rail or coach travel, its slow and dangerous, internal flights are quite cheap. If you like seafood you are in for a treat.I may be bias as i live there, but Nha Trang is a must, fabulous beach and great restaurants.have a good time.

What the heck is ditty mao? It's đi đi mau, meaning go go quick, literally translated. Đi=to go, mau= quick.
Command Đi đi=go or go away.
