Wayne Gretzky was an offensive phenom, but his defensive skills were lacking to put it kindly. Mario Lemieux made guys like Warren Young and John Cullen look like a star. The guys who played with Gretzky were stars in their own right. Paul Coffey,
Mark Messier, Glenn Anderson, and Jari Kurri could put up impressive point totals with or without Gretzky. As for the guy who said Grant Fuhr. The reason his GAA was so high, was because the Oilers juggernaut from that era played only one end of the ice. He had little to no help. The reality is the Oilers would have been worse off if he wasn't there to bail them out defensively. Eric Lindros was a decent player, until he started getting the concussions. He is overrated, but so is Yashin. I think people had higher expectations for Lindros. How can Jagr be overrated? He has won 5 scoring titles, 2 Stanley Cup, 1 MVP award, plus 3 MVP awards voted on by the NHL players. He's been a first team or second team NHL all-star eight times in his career. He can be lazy at times, especially on the defensive end, but overrated, I don't think so.

Lindros has been hampered by concussions but like Forsberg, when they are/were healthy couldn't be considered the all time over-rated. Daigle is definitely up there, but seriously folks, any hockey fan from the 60's on will remember Vancouver Canucks first overall pick. Instead of Gilbert Perrault, they chose Dale Tallon. While Buffalo never won a Cup either, Perrault went on to have a Hall of fame career. Tallon never went anywhere. No excuses for Lindros either but at least he has an excuse.
P.S.
And who will ever forget Montreal Canadiens first overall pick, Doug Wickenheiser, talk about overrated.

Since 1st overall picks seem to be on the block here. How about the very first draft pick in Thrashers history, Patrick Stefan.
I mean first overall and he's only got like what 150 pts to his credit, at least Daigle has produced more then that. Oh and Patrick Falloon. He sucked too.
As for Mike Modano, and Nick Lidstrom are you kidding me? The best defenseman of our generation is overrated? Sure he's had good forwards in front of him, but his ability to control the game, and poise make him a shoo in for the Hall of Fame.
Modano if I'm not mistaken is the highest scoring american of all time. Won a Stanley, an Olympic Silver metal, 6 time all star. Sounds pretty good to me.
And as for Brodeur, he is a God! Sure for the majority of his career he has played with a solid team defence in front of him with Stevens, and Neidermayer, but last year he proved that even without them and having the rules changed to hinder his puck moving talent, Brodeur is still the measuring stick to which all goalies are measured.
Plus 2 Vezina trophies, 3 Stanley Cups, a Calder trophy, and he's on pace to surpass Patrick Roy's record for career wins.

Alexander Daigle was the first to come to mind, but I think it's Rick DiPietro. He sucks. He breaks down when the team needs him most. I don't know why the Islanders even resigned him, let alone give him a 15-year contract worth 67.5 million. He's not even worth a penny. And to think the Islanders gave up Roberto Luongo for this guy.
Anyone who said Crosby is stupid. He's 19 and already has 128 points to his credit. He's on pace for 2356 points if he plays til 40. That's second overall for all-time points. Even "The Great One" himself named Crosby as his succeesor. Overrated, huh?

i will bypass with Leetch. and that i agree that the Canucks would have gained the cup in 'ninety 4 if he wasn't on the Rangers. (i.e. i imagine he honestly had a higher effect on the sequence than Messier - Messier replaced into an magnificent participant, do not get me incorrect yet in that different sequence, and in lots of different techniques, Leetch replaced right into a stellar participant - even in spite of the actuality that i'm a Canucks fan I even may supply him that) in the present day, i imagine the perfect American participant is on the Canucks crew - Ryan Kessler.

Grant Fuhr. He won 5 Stanley Cups, (really only 4 because Ranford played every game in '90 while Fuhr was on drugs)
His goals against average was always amongst the bottom half of other NHL goalies, yet he kept landing large contracts with each team he'd go to.
On Edmonton in the 80's anyone could have played net and won the cup.

Dan Cloutier is so overrated. He's had 3-30+ wins in a season in Vancouver but now that he's with the L.A. Kings. He looks mediocre and he's terrible.

Ray Bourque...
I admit he was a good player, but MY GOD,come on!
I was ecstatic when he retired.........
I mean Jesus,he had to go to another team to win a Stanley Cup....a team that was going to win one with or without him!
The people that think Crosby is over-rated...are you insane or are you dumb?
19 years old and 28 pts!
Scored 100 points as an 18 year old!
Look at how long it took Thornton to get to where he is right now?
Are you people kidding me?
Watch the "Kid" play...
Sure he is a suck, but give him time,he will mature into a consistent 120 to 140 point player and the captain of a Stanley Cup team!
Maybe not in Pittsburgh,but somewhere!
