To be honest with you, what ever is cheapest, more bang for your buck. Get a cheap one on ebay, there are thousands of them.

Dell has a great customer service department, that's the only plus on different "brand names," other than that, cheaper is better, coz you'll just end up buying a new one in 2 years anyway.

I've had Gateway, Dell, Compaq, and i'm on a Toshiba right now. Plus i've got a Mac (totally different), there is no real difference in brand name, anything you want to get extra on your computer, you can add on with any company. Get something disposable, technology moves to fast.

Whatever you get, get a "business-grade" one.

For instance, Dell makes a consumer grade model (around $500 each) as well as business-grade models (starting at $1200 and going up).

I've had good luck with Toshiba, Dell and Thinkpad (formerly IBM), providing you get a business grade of the Toshiba and Dell models.

Rule of thumb -- if the manufacturer won't sell you a three-year "all-hazards" warranty then don't expect it to last for very long.

If you want to go for the best laptop.

Try the Alienware M.ALX series.
I love all Alienware Laptops, they are Amazing.
check it out on their site www.alienware.com
they are gonna be expensive, but they are the best.

Other than that, i love the Qosmio By Toshiba, it's good.
The HP DV 8000 or DV 9000 Series is good too.
Dell has an XMS series which is just ok. i guess.

for good performance you should go for large amount of memory, and a good graphics card, for good gaming, and a power processor.

macintosh!!! no viruses to worry about, and the picture is outstanding. I've had mine (the clamshell) for 5 years. I spend about $65 every year and a half to upgrade the operating system, and it's well worth it.

My desktop is a sony vaio, and it's great, but the only drawback to sony products is that if there is ever a hardware problem, you can't just put in a no name piece. It must be purchased from sony, which makes it very expensive and inconvenient. While, I can't confirm this for laptops, my bet is that it works the same way.

I don't know if it's the best but I just got a Compaq Presario and I love it! It basically does everything for me and it was so easy to hook up to the internet.
