I'm a 37 year old, and I remember the effect "Grease" had on me when I was a kid and it first came out. I was thinking exactly what you're asking--that it looks like "High School Musical" is the "Grease" for this generation. I watched it out of curiosity, and was actually pretty impressed by how good it was, and how catchy the tunes were.

The way that High School Musical strtuck with the number of preteens that it did, I'd definitely say it's the Grease of this generation. My only concern is the overmarketing that Disney is doing of it...with a second movie in production and a third one being planned (since the producer said he intended it to be a three part story).
People complain about the acting talent of HSM...but if people were to look past the "it's a classic!" of Grease, they'd see that the actors weren't exactly Oscar quality themselves back then....not to mention that it was clear those actors were WELL past high school age. I do agree the Grease is a classic, but I'm also not naive enough to believe that it doesn't have its faults.
The nice thing about HSM? The fact it's *clean*. There's no sexual content (Grease is filled with innuendos and some crude humor...and even the innuendo of an older man flirting with a high school girl). Parents don't have to worry a bit about any questionable content....though it deals with pretty much the same content as Grease did...falling love with someone who was not part of your clique. The only downside about Grease is that it taught that it was ok to compromise your standards to get what you want (i.e. Sandy lowering her standards by dressy sleazy and smoking to win Danny back). HSM never crosses that line, but instead teaches that you can be with someone without having to compromise who you are...and that anything less than that isn't worthwhile.
Grease is wonderful, and I believe that HSM is a clean, family friendly version of it for this generation.

I have never seen actually sat down and watched High School Musical, but my 8 year old seems to really like it. In my opinion I grew up watching Grease, so that would be my pick. Awhobobadewbobawapbamboom!

high school musical doesn't not compare to the love in grease. grease is a classic that can happen....high school musical is not poetic enough in the way that u feel for sandy and her broken heart.
