Sony computers have struggled in the past with repair rates. My experiences with Sony tech support is not positive.

If you're gonna spend lots of money for a notebook, opt for a business-grade Toshiba, Dell or Lenovo (aka "Thinkpad").

Don't buy a consumer-grade from anyone (including Toshiba or Dell) unless you want a disposable computer with horrible support.

My clients just bought 3 Dell D-620 notebook computers. Fully loaded with M$ Office and three-year all-hazards warranty, they paid about $1700 each. We expect those to last for 3-4 years in the hands of archaeologists (two of them) and nurses (the remaining one).
