I don't know where you live, but you could post for free on your local Craigslist.org. If no one responds, you could put up signs on your street, or go to neighbors to find out if they are missing their lil guy. If you are still at a dead end, put an ad up for a free ferret to good home. Or keep him yourself. They really are quite fun animals to own. If all else fails, places like PetSmart or PetCo will sometimes take them for free and sell them.
Most likely it is a neighbors or someone in your close vacinity. My ferrets have gotten out a couple times and I am so relieved when they are found.
A note on a previous post - again I do not know where you live, but there are states (California is one) where ferrets are illegal and yes they will put the ferret down if you turn it in. If you live in a state where they are illegal, then I would fervently try to find the owner and if none are found, try to find someone to take it without publicly advertising it. If you are in a state where they are illegal, there should be a rescue shelter that can take them out of state. It depends on how strict their laws are where you live.

Ferrets are only illegal to own in California, Hawaii and in New York City. If you are in these places, a call first to vets offices will provide you with a solution that does not include killing the ferret. If you do not live in these places, take the ferret to an animal shelter or any vet who will have resources to find a forever home.

Ferrets aren't illegal to own in all states. Are you sure you're in one where it is? Even so, you might want to do a Web search for "No Kill WILD Animal Shelters", or "No Kill Animal Shelters", in your area. One of them may be able to take it in, or at least be able to direct you to another one that may.

Why do you believe the vet would kill it? Is it acting sick or is something wrong with it? Take it to your local SPCA or Humane Society. Also, you could contact a ferret rescue organization in your area. Here's a website that lists state by state.

I don't think the vet would put it down, if you managed to catch it chances are it is someones pet! Make some "Found" posters and put them in places where people are going to see them. (shops, the vets etc) Put an ad in the local paper if you can.
If by chance you don't find the ferret's home, you might have to re-advertise to give it to someone if you can't look after it.
good luck!

See if there is a ferret rescue, or an animal rescue in your area. At least where I live animal rescues have a no-kill policy. Good luck.

Trust me, they won't kill it, they will either keep it (take it away from you, since they are illegal) or test it for rabies and other diseases and then allow you to either keep it or put it up for adoption. However, if you are truly worried that they will kill it (which those s*ns of b*tches shouldn't do in the first place), then you should put it up for adoption, such as on petfinder.com.

Well, research a little bit on ferrets and see if you or any of your friends wants to keep it.
