Hi, I've been playing the trombone for almost 40 years now. I play on a Mirafone Bass trombone, which isn't made anymore, and I've always been partial to the rich sound of the Conn 88h. It's the one with the F-trigger. Yes, the trombone is a bass clef instrument. I also believe it has the most beautiful sound there is, especially when played in quartets, or trombone choirs.

actually, it's considered a tenor instrument, unless you are talking about a true bass or contrabass trombone part
