The Nano is fine for your purposes. You can check http://www.myspace.com/soundonthego for a couple reviews.

You can use your own music, but it must be imported into itunes first.

Yes it's pretty portable. But since you're working out at a gym and you don't really need to pay much attention to screens and stuff, i think iPod shuffle is better. It's smaller and cheaper. The sound quality is pretty much the same.

The nano is great. It's also better than the video-capable ipods for working out because they're more durable (no moving parts).

i might want to flow with the iPod contact because of ordinary contact-show screen navigation and a valuable length show screen. The show screen length is ideal for playing video clips on the flow. The song sounds tremendous by the headphones, yet you may purely use the headphones that come out of the field, no different headphones will in good structure. 8GB is honestly not that a lot, yet in case you dont favor to apply a good number of memory, 8GB will be okay. in case you want to get a more low-priced iPod flow with the classic, yet i do propose the contact.

I'm loving mine. I just wish there was a better and safe way to download all my 80's music without paying .99 per song. I use it to workout, and wow, it makes such a difference. I work out so much harder than I did before I got it.

overpriced.

limited types of media.

get any palm device with an SD memory port.
i read my ebooks, listen to audio books, listen to my mp3's, watch videos, etc.etc.etc.. on mine. (and it wasn't $400...LOL)

apple is, as always, a fad.
