Yes, If the owner goes to jail the SPCA will take the animals and will probably return although i'm not quite sure on that part.

In larger areas, the SPCA may help on something like that, but smaller towns & rural areas don't often have that kind of help. I am President of The Foundation for the Assistance of Animal Owners in our county, and I primarily take calls from the sheriff's dept and local police to help with animals in emergencies.

For example, a few weeks ago the sheriff called saying they needed me to go to a certain address to retrieve a blind & deaf 3-legged dog. The owner had died (3 days prior) and they had just found him, and the dog stayed with him.

I took the dog home and fostered her overnight, but the coroner called next day to inform me of the man's will, in which he stated the dog was to be euthanized & cremated. So I had to deliver the little dog to the vet to carry out the man's wishes.

I've also taken calls in the middle of the night to retrieve dogs from police calls where a drunk is carried to jail, if a dog is found in the road alive, and when people -- especially the elderly -- are going to the hospital.

It's interesting work, at times rewarding, but often frustrating and heartbreaking. Volunteers are *always* in need! If you have an interest in doing this kind of work (no pay involved), e-mail me and I can tell you how to get started. If you need help, I'll see if I can locate someone in your area among my rescue contacts.

Usually the SPCA or Humane Society is called first and depending on the type of animal a plan of action is established to place them appropriately.
