Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADD/ADHD) is a neurological condition caused by a lack of adequate neurotransmitter (brain chemicals) carrying information to the frontal region of the brain. This is why medications are effective in treatment--they stimulate the part of the brain that is not working effectively.
New MRI studies prove that this is real so people who say it doesn't exist don't know what they are talking about and prefer to stay judgmentally ignorant.
It is a developmental delay marked by impulsive behavior, disorganization (in personal effects and thinking), time management, and often difficulties in social skills, reading, math or other school subjects.
Often people with ADHD are marked at irresponsible and lazy because they don't do what they are supposed to do and do other things instead--which gets them into trouble.
5% of the population has this condition, and 95 % benefit from medication--HOWEVER, only about 15% of children who qualify for the diagnosis are actually medicated.
ALSO--children who are not medicated have a MUCH GREATER chance of becoming involved in drug or alcohol abuse. Children who ARE medicated have the same chance as the general population.

Attention-deficit disorder?
Neurological condition that is often evident from childhood may cause restlessness, disorganization, hyperactivity, distractibility, and mood swings.
Kids usually have short attention spans and marked difficulty with concentrating. The child may seem to "zone out" often. Some may have learning disabilities also. Medication is sometimes used to manage the symptoms in order to help the child with school.
Attention Deficit Disorder is a neurobiological/genetic condition. It is a biochemical disorder caused by an imbalance or deficiency in certain chemicals in the brain. This means that transmitters in the brain do not work effectively.

I am essentially adding on to Blue Nunn, I too have a child who has ADD.
One of the marked differences in children with ADD/ ADHD is their ability to comprehend (understand). Reading is difficult, they get angry and frustrated. It is also believed to have a connection to common sense, children who have ADD/ADHD seem to lack it at the younger ages.
Their are some benifits to the medication for ADD/ADHD, it does help them stay focused and able to comprehend better.
Personally I hate medicating children unless it is absolutly needed!!!!!!!
Ritalin and similar drugs can stunt growth which is why if you can it is recommended to take them off the meds during the summer.
Most children will out grow ADD/ ADHD (extreme end of the disorder may not) by puberty and possibly early adulthood.
ADD/ ADHD can be managed by behavior mdification and some studies suggest that a diet that limits caffine (not sugar) could help as well as adding more potasium and other vitamins.
Caffine causes hyper behavior, sugar has been proven not to cause it (Chocolate candy has both caffine and sugar). Think about it if you drank cup after cup of coffee or an energy drink (main ingriedent is caffine) you becom jittery or unable to sleep.
My son was able to get A's and B's in school mainly due to behavior modification like reading aloud and rereading to help him comprehend. In the begining he was on ritalin and now at age 18 he has been off it for 5 years now and does well with using the techniques he was taught to manage it.

While others have given you excellent examples, I'd like to refer to the first person who answered your question as subject 1, evidence A. Sometimes people with ADD are so impulsively quick to act without thinking things through. This makes life VERY hard. LOL
