A Chevy Cobalt is the overall best choice. It was Automobile magazines second pick for sport coupe (SS model). It is excellent on gas, and actually looks good unlike all other economy cars. In Car and Drivers econo sedan the Toyota Corolla was ranked 5th out of 6. Thats not exactly good, the winner was the Volkswagen RAbbit. The Chevy Cobalt was not tested, so that says nothing about how good/bad it is. Read the reviews and nothing will come close to the Cobalts ratings. Some other good options are the Honda Fit, Nissan Versa, Dodge CAliber, and Chevy AVeo. Last year Toyota had the most recalls, but the media "failed" to notice since millions would stand against them because of thier reputation. These days reputation is nothing, technology advances so fast it cant keep up. For ex: three years ago GM was one of the worst companies, now they have the most top-rated vehicles, and the quality/reliability surpasses Toyota. Honda is still on top of the reliability ratings. Ford also had more recalls than GM and DaimlerChrysler combined, for reasons like exploding engines and wheels falling off. Here is a quote from the Washington Posts review of the Toyota CAmry "one of which is the Chevrolet Malibu, which in my real-world driving experience has been every bit as good and reliable as the much-ballyhooed Camry but has been maligned primarily because it is a Chevrolet". Oddly enough that was an '04 Malibu VS the totally redisigned '07 Camry. Common problems with Toyotas are plastic rattling until it falls off. People then complain that when they take it to the dealer to be fixed they just say "The cars are made with so much plastic its practically impossible to fix" GM is also the worlds fastest growing manufacturer, and that dosent happen by accident. If you do the research, you will be left with the Chevy Cobalt.
PS if you want a midsize sedan the Saturn Aura is the best. It hasnt had a bad review yet. Its German enginered and tops CAmry in all categories, especially looks and fun factor.

in case you want a motor vehicle that would get fairly reliable gas mileage, get a Honda, Toyota, or Geo that replaced into bought sometime contained in the 1990's. I have a 1994 Toyota Corolla (also bought as Geo Prizm). It has a a million.6L Toyota 4A-FE engine and that i'm getting round 38-39 MPG on the line. also, you may anticipate anybody of those to very last lengthy. My Corolla has almost 2 hundred,000 miles on it and runs large. (It burns a touch oil, although, even though it fairly is envisioned for a motor vehicle with that many miles on it). although, I have a ok&N air filter out, and use Valvoline complete man made oil. those issues facilitates out lots.

I bought a ford focus (used) last year for less than $9,000. It gets 37 mpg highway and 32 mpg city. The mantience on it is very cheap since it's an american car. It's my first car, but I'd buy another. They're great cars! I've heard nothing bad about them. And later if you want to "pimp it out", it's cheap to do that too!

Hummm. I gather you need it now. Any small car with a small engine. Maybe try looking at the classifies where people are selling their cars for whatever reason. If you are located near a military base, get their military paper, alot of people leaving must sell off their cars. One car a 2006 is selling for $8,000 at Eglin afb, Fl. Seems like the guy bought it for his girlfriend and she left him. Anyway, he just wants to get rid of it. Only 538 miles. Sooooooooo, check around. This is possible. Small car, small price, great gas. Good luck.

Dodge Caliber - about 30 miles to the gallon and starts at about $13,000. Well equipped at $16,500. It has some pretty cool features like a fridge to cool 20 oz bottles, MP3 plug-in for the stereo, satellite radio, lighted cupholders, a 12volt plug in, flashlight, speakers built into the back hatch.

I had a Ford Aspire with 180,000 miles on it. I hated the car, just because it had ZERO fun factor, but it never gave me any trouble. I paid $800 for it and it had about 56,000 miles on it. The only things I did to it ever were oil changes, exhaust, brakes and tires and I got $650 for it when I sold it.

Try a diesel. They get up to 50 miles to a gallon. If you can get past the fact that it feels like you are driving a bus, they are a good option. I would go for a turbo-diesel as they have better performance than a bog-standard diesel.

Honda's cost to much. any small make of car is good. (cavalier, grand am, so on and so on. even hyundai is alright, even kia.) you don't want something with a v-8. a 4 or 6 cylinder is just fine...
