I believe it all depends on your desire to see your niece or nephew She is in control and you might have to suck up some BS to make sure you get your side of the families traits instilled in them. Just wonder why she needs a target?

Target of what? Keep your boundaries clear and your nieces and nephews in mind and do what is right for them.
Put money into trust for their education, spend time with them, lightening their mother's load.
Put yourself in her shoes and keep out of her way.
