After the towel bar in my bathroom had become loose, I attempted to tighten the screws but found that the large drywall plugs had created rupee-sized holes. How do I repair the holes in a manner that will allow me to rehang the bar in the same spot?

If the wall is sheetrock;, Go to home depot and buy a couple of screw in anchors.

If the holes are not on top of a wall stud (Hollow wall) then you will need to get the 1/2" plastic white screw in anchors.

If either of the holes has a stud behind it, You will need to get the metal screw in anchors.

Either type will come with a screw that will screw into the anchor and each one supports about 20-30 lbs.

Remove the existing screws, And just screw the anchor in the existing hole. Then mount your towel bar and screw the smaller screw into the new anchor.

If the hole is larger than 1/2" you will need to fill it with "Drywall Mud" or Multi-Purpose joint compound and let it dry then screw in a new anchor.

Hope this helps!

Not easy to do. Towel bar should be fastened to the studs. Most studs are 16" apart and most towel bars are some other length. Now that the holes are there. You could buy a piece of 1"x4" board at the lumber store long enough to attach the towel bar to and attach the board to the studs. Take the towel bar with you and tell them what you want to do if don't understand. You will have to paint or stain the board, they can help you with that too.

You could put larger anchors into the wall and then put the original anchors inside the new ones. You could patch the holes with quick set drywall compound, not spackle, and re-drill holes for the anchors. Or you could patch the holes and move the towel bar over the studs so you can drive screws into something solid.
