I want to be an actress when I grow up. But my parents aren't to keen on me ditching the whole buisness/dreary/suit kind of job that they want me to have. They think I'll turn into some kind of Drew Barrymore. How can I prove I can handle it with responsibility and normalness. How can I tell them that I won't be some sex-obsessed slutty celebrity who has tattoos, does drugs, and smokes while dating a different guy per week

oh and I'm in 8th grade and do my school online. We live upper middle class and I am going to a private school for 9th-10th grade and then to this early college thing for 11-12. see the thing is, my parents are very...obsessed about my education and it really let them down when I said I wanted to do something tv related.

Get involved in drama club as your extra-curricular, or just audition for a school play. Get a feel for how acting is supposed to work. If you can, do the school paper as well, but if you can't do both, just pick one thing for right now. You have several more years to experiment with this.

I cannot tell you how many different careers I wanted when I was your age and as I got older. You need to try different things out, and once you find something that works for you, work hard practicing THAT thing so you can get better at it.

As far as promising your parents that you aren't going to become a Celebrity Gone Wild, slow your roll. You are not actually a celebrity right now, not even a minor one. You don't need to worry about issue that unless you're trying to land a professional role RIGHT NOW. Your parents probably already worry about drugs and teen sex as it is. You need to reassure them that you are doing good in your life now.

How old are you?

You're only going to be able to prove that you're responsible by going to college and getting a degree. Let's say you don't make it as an actress (and don't say you will because you just don't know), you need to have a career to fall back on.

About the slutty celebrity--you're not going to be able to prove this one. Why? You're not wealthy now, are you? You'll be surprised how your attitude will change when/if you make the big bucks. It's easier to say that you won't do that now.

Basically, you're probably around 16, yes? Get involved into stage acting first. Go to college, and just let your parents worry. That's their job. Trust me--if you go to college, you'll give your parents a less chance of worrying.

Take the intellectual route - study Shakespeare, Ibsen, and all the classic plays. Aim for Broadway, not Hollywood. Some of the greatest actresses working today started on stage. Julia Robert on the other hand tried to do stage acting for the first time just recently and bombed.
