There are families in transit from one point to the other who are not really celebrating Thanksgiving. There are singles who do not want to cook. There are people going back and forth to a hospital to see someone or family member and the last thing they are thinking about is cooking. There are people that are working such as police, firemen, doctors, nurses and not everyone will be going home for big meal.

It just depends on several factors.
Is your family/friends around?
Do you recognize this holiday (Native American's, foreigners, or Jehova's Witness's).
Do you really feel like cooking?
I personally have never eaten at a restaurant on Thanksgiving but there are many people that appreciate you working on this day.

I haven't. However, my auntie and her husband and my cousin go to a homeless shelter every year on Thanksgiving to help out.
Their reason for this is: Their oldest child was born on Thanksgiving, he also died really close to his 30th birthday. Since then they decided not to sit at home and eat on that particular day, whereas, they would feel it to be more beneficial to go someplace and help out those who otherwise would not get a meal on that day.

I've spent holidays alone with no food because back then the stores were closed and so were the restaruants. I'm glad to see things open on all the holidays "just in case."
