In our bathroom we have ceramic tiles glued on to the walls to about the 4 ft mark. Can these tiles be painted? Or should I just take them off and re-drywall the area?

Yes the tiles can be either painted with special EPOXY paint, or the can have "Ceramic" paint applied (By a contractor" that will look just like new tile, But in either case you will not be able to have one color grout and one color tile they will all be the same.

As far as cost. It will cost less to paint the tile yourself with epoxy paint. Time consuming and takes some prep work.

See if there is a BATHTUB or appliance re-finishing company in your area and get them to give you a FREE quote to get some numbers together.

they can if you rough up the surface but the effect looks a bit tacky ( i note that the people below may disagree but the tile will look very much like the fiberglass 'tile' panels that you see in pre-molded tub enclosures so you might as well cover them with this material and save all the prep ( lol ) )

there is one other option and that is to cover them with another material and use a molding at the transition ( for a colonial look vertical tongue and groove boards work well ) if you try this anchor at the top and bottom only if possible avoid drilling the tile if possible place anchors ( screws or nails ) through the grout ( predrill )

YUK!!! That is a "60's" thing. Update! Either re-tile, or strip it off, re-rock and wall paper, re-tile or what ever suits your likes. Painting tile reminds me of cheap motels in Florida.

You can get tile paint but it usually cannot go in areas that are constantly getting wet. - eg walls are okay but not shower recesses. Ask at your local hardware store.
