The workforce should reflect the society it serves.

In the UK there is an organisation called the Employers Forum on Disability, whose employer members employ 20% of the UK workforce, which actively encourages and promotes the retention of people who become disabled, in their jobs, arguing that employers can ill afford to lose their skills and experience (and it will cost them far more to train somebody new) and encourages employers to realise that the "disability pound" amounts to £80 billion per year, and that if their business is not trying to attract those customers, their rivals will capture that slice of the market.

i,e, their arguments are based on it being good business sense for employers to be more disablity aware.

Similar considerations would apply to minority ethnic communities. If people feel excluded by your business, they will shop elsewhere. If when a black person walks in the store, every single shop assistant they can see is white, they are likely to feel unwelcome and take their custom elsewhere.

Its all about making money. As problems get tougher, businesses need new and innovative ways to deal with them, and they achieve his by bringing together minds from different backgrounds / experiences. This becomes especially important since the demographics in the US and other parts of the world are changing. Since the customer base is changing, companies have realized the importance of having employees on hand who reflect their customer attitudes and preferences (and who may also help them win certain business deals).
