I have been through legal nightmare with Bearshare and what I thought I was downloading from it. What you think you are downloading isn't always what you receive. Be very, very careful.

Bearshare is a perfectly legal program. However, some of the software/audio/video available via Bearshare is copyrighted and therefore illegal to download.

Bearshare is legal, and is now full of adware. If you disable the adware, it reinstalls every time you restart Bearshare. It also tries to upgrade itself through viral downloads. Try Morpheus instead. As with all P2P programmes, the legality has to do with the sharing of copyrighted programmes.
