I just heard this at a Moms club meeting last night. Mine didn't have a problem with constipation/rice cereal but a few others did. If you're breastfeeding you might consider trying oatmeal first instead if rice cereal is causing a problem. That's what another mom did and it worked well.
Hope this helps!

Sometimes that introduction of solids to a baby can bring on constipation. Rice cereal is low in fiber, so it's basically just taking up room once it's digested. Make sure she's still getting enough liquid even though cereal has been introduced. If she keeps getting constipated one regular rice cereal, you can try barley or oat cereal as it does have more fiber. Don't worry! It's perfectly normal! If the constipation doesn't clear up in a few days, give her just a little bit of apple juice and it should get things moving!

Yes--my daughter was constipated by it a little too. My doctor gave me the OK at 5 months to give her watered down apricot or prune juice, but only if she was going more than 2 or 3 days without a BM, or was showing signs of distress when trying to. Warm baths and compresses to the area can also help.

first I would wait until about 6 months, she may not be ready for it yet. I didn't start giving my son anything beyond formula until he was 5 1/2 months, then again he already had teeth by then too. You might want to take to either your doctor or a public health nurse. I had one come for a home visit every month and found it very helpful.

Rice cereal was the first "solid" food my babies had and I was grateful that their bm's were more solid. So, maybe it is too soon, although it does seem to help babies sleep through the night.

Juice diluted with water or mix the cereal with juice. It's normal because it's their first solid food and their digestive system is learning how to work.

1) Yes it does because it is full of synthetic vitamins and minerals, particularly iron
2) 4 months is TOO YOUNG for solid food.
3) Grains should be the last food introduced as babies generally can not digest them properly until 8 or 9 months.

Yes I had a problem, just switch to the oatmeal. It's not as hard to digest.

It can. Rice is binding and is often fed to relieve diarrhea.
