It has a large 8" lid with a built in vent in the middle. I Don't know if I should let it vent or stop up the vent. Should gasoline be stored airtight? It will be outside under a shade tree and away from any buildings or sources or ignition.I'm just storing it for the winter (so it will be cold out) for emergencies, etc.I know the vent is probably so liquids can be drained or pumped out, but I can always just loosen the lid to fill up a small gas jug to put in my car or generator or whatever and then tighten the lid back.(that is if gasoline should NOT be vented.Does anybody know for sure?

Non vented!!

If it is vented gas vapors will escape, and given enough time all the gas will evaporate. The only reason to vent the tank is if the gas is expanding, and in cold weather it will not!

Gas will expand and contract with the weather...I have seen can's bust apart because they wern't vented.... You need a special vent system to keep the moisture from entering the system....thats how water get's in. Also you need to treat the gas with a sta-bilt type of fuel stabelizer, to keep it fresh...other-wise your stored gas will go bad and you have gained nothing.

You have to vent it.
But you have to make sure it doesn't get any moisture in it too.
BIG delima.

They make vents for that.
