The PRC was establiched in 1949.....almost dead center of the 20th century not earrly 20th century. Before that it was a Republic...The Republic of China established by Sun Yat Sen of the Kuomintang (KMT or Nationalist Part) in 1912 until Chiang Kai-Shek fled to Taiwan. Before that is was a monarchy under the Manchus.
Either way China has been named Zhonguo (translated usually to Middle or Central Kingdom) in Mandarin through out Chinese history since about 700 BC. Although China as an independent nation did not exist during Yuan (Mongol empire) and Qing (Manchu) Dynasties.
Cathay, China, Sino.....all names used by western Nations not China.
As for Egypt it has been conquered and or ruled by by Alexander the Great's armies, Romans, various Islamic Empires including the Sejuk and Ottoman Empires, and most recently the British empire.
Japan has been know as Nippon or Nihon by its inhabitants for about 2000 years although it was occupied briefly after WWII.

It's NOT China. The current full name of China is People's Republic of China, first formed in the early 1900s. Before that, it was a monarchy. I would guess either Egypt or United Kingdom.

Egypt is good except it was a territory of Rome... possibly India (a colony of Britain) so i would go with a more isolated country, such as one of the Scandinavian countries (Norway, Sweden, etc...)
My final guess is china, even though that is divided into provinces

China has never been called Cathay or China. That's just what english speakers call it. In Chinese, the direct translation is "middle kingdom", is pronounced "jong-guo" and it has had that name for a very long time.
