They don't wait because they don't want to or can't wait. Some are rich people who don't think $2,000 means anything, some are desperate parents who promised their children them and couldn't get any pre-orders, and some are people who are so desperate, they will waste $1,400 on something that will be $1,500 lower in 6 months.

There are people for whom money means little. Whether they pay $600 or $2000 does not matter as long as they have what they want now.
PS3 is in dramatic undersupply to the demand.
You are right that this will not last and eventually people will pay retail prices or less for a PS3.
