I just faced that today looking for a replacement flush handle.

Home Depot has a lot of standard stuff and in general is cheaper.

But if you need some advice and are only getting one that has to be an exact fit go to a plumbing supply house. They know what you need after talking to you on the phone and will put it aside at Will Call so it is waiting when you show up. It costs more but at least it will there and solve the problem making it a bargain even at the higher price.

I am in Home Depot at least 4 times a day and know the store backwards and forwards.

If you are looking for PVC fittings Home Depot beats everyones prices and they have a pretty good selection.

However copper plumbing fitting at the Home Depot are a bit more expensive and they don't sell all of them in packaged or box quantities like the plumbing supply places have to offer.

The brass fittings like flare fittings and compression fittings are about the same at either place.

If you know what you want, Home Depot has the advantage, assuming you are buying more than 10 of each one. Going to a hardware store will be easier and faster, and if you aren't sure what you need, or need just a few.
