First of all, make sure your skin is washed morning and night and do 1-2 facials a week. It makes makeup go on really smooth and even if you do not wear makeup it makes you look fresh and your skin very smooth.

The best thing I have ever used is by Smashbox and it is a foundation primer. It is a clear, mostly herbal smoother for your skin. Your makeup stays on all day and goes on flawlessly. It is amazing stuff. It is pricey but you can get it on eBay. You only use a little and I do not use a moisturizer with it. It makes my skin unbelievably soft. So you save on the cost of a moisturizer. A bottle should last 6-9 months. If you have any lines, it smooths them too.

Next, choose a foundation that is close to your skin color. A fresh face is in now. But a fresh face does need a little foundation to make your skin look smooth and healthy. So do not go for the heavy look. If you have some imperfections, use a concealer that is also your skin color and put foundation on after concealer but use only enough to make you look flawless. Blush really only looks good over foundation.

A little blush in a soft color is good. Apply by smiling and putting it on with a good blush brush where your cheeks are defined by your smiling. If you are blonde or dark haired or light brown, go for soft peach or pink or rose. Choose a color that is complimentary to your coloring. If you have an olive complexion, lean to the rose and avoid orange or brownish shades. If you are a red head, go for peach.

On your eyes, cover the lid with a white or off white to make you look wide awake. Define the outside corners and the crease with a soft brown or gray. During the day, you can go without shadow but it does enhance your eyes. Lining your eyes is up to you. Use a soft lining pencil and put on close to eye lashes. A thin line is best. Use black mascara. It will define your eyes. Brush on and up to ends of lashes. You may need to apply twice to really lengthen and darken and enhance lashes.

Lipstick or gloss? For day, a gloss with some color is good. At night you can use a shade that matches your natural lip color and put gloss over it. I read today that you should match the inside color of your lips. It should be a color that is complimentary to your blush. If you choose a peach blush then your gloss or lipstick should be of a similar shade.

If you tend towards an oily complexion or tend towards an oily/shiny T zone, I would lightly dust with a translucent powder after I applied my blush and shadow. Almay has a very nice one. If you really want your makeup to stay set, use a clean wash cloth that has been rinsed in warm water and really squeezed out and gently hold on face for a few seconds. Do this before applying mascara.

*If you are in a rush, wash face, moisturize or use primer, dust with a little powder or a little foundation and put on a little mascara and lip gloss. You may look a little plain that day but you will at least have a somewhat finished and smooth looking face. Take your powder with you to touch up if you get shiny. If you are doing your facials, you may develop a nice color to your cheeks which is a real plus.

Work with your skin color, not against it. Choose an eyeshadow that complements your eyes, but doesn't stand out like a bandage over your eye. Less is more! Especially when we're talking blush and eye colors. Mascara is a great booster, but don't clump it on, and make sure your brows are clean but natural looking (no unibrow, but don't make little thin lines either, you just look surprised). Good luck!
