I'm pregnant so I recently had one done. The Pap smear is a necessary test that can detect cervical cancer, or changes in cells that could become cancerous. Vital for all women, the Pap smear is performed yearly for women 18 and older or as soon as they become sexually active. The first thing they will do is have you disrobe and change into a "lovely" paper gown. Then they will tell you to lay on your back, with your feet in stirrups. Then they will use and instrument that is used to open your vagina called a speculum, it will be inserted vaginally in order to widen the vaginal canal, allowing examination internally. You should not feel any pain, only mild discomfort. The more relaxed you are, the less discomfort you will feel. Then, a sample of cells will be taken by the use of a small spatula. Again, you may feel mild discomfort. The cells are then placed in a tube with a preservative, or placed on a slide. They are then sent to a lab for testing. You should receive the results in about two weeks. Try to make yourself as comfortable as possible by thinking of something else or even talking to the doctor and asking questions. Don't be so nervous all women go through this. Good luck sweetie.

Short anatomy discussion. Virgins do not always have a complete hymen in place. The hymen is commonly broken when a tampon is first inserted. So, the absence of a hymen does not mean a woman has lost her virginity. To get a PAP smear, the doctor must insert a swab past a previously opened hymen to reach the cervix (neck) of the uterus. The swab is then smeared on a slide or put in a solution for the Pap smear examination under the microscope. If that reveals the presence of sperm or the changes of a sexually-transmitted virus, like the HPV (human papilloma virus), then it must have come from a male partner. Such information is available to the doctor, but the presence of sperm is not always written in the report so that the patient will not be embarrassed. However, HPV must be reported and treated and will be in the report. Good luck!

Pap's smear or Papanicolau Smear is a smear done on a vaginal specimen to determine cervical cancer. It is a very practical and useful test for the early detection of cancer.

It is a simple and quick test. While you lie on an exam table, the doctor puts an instrument called a speculum into your vagina, opening it to see the cervix. he or she will use a special stick or brush to take a few cells from inside and around the cervix. The cells are placed on a glass slide and sent to a lab for examination. It's usually painless, but Pap test is uncomfortable for some women. My man is a gynecologist, so I know

It is a rapid simple test performed on a smear from the vaginal secretion of a lady to diagnose a possible cancer cervix uterus. The same principle can be used to study many other body fluids also. If a pathologist is available around your doctor can give the result in 45 minutes. The experience of the pathologist is of course the limiting factor

They use a long metal speculum, and yes it does feel cold, and put it in your vagina, and swipe if with something, like a cutip, if you are a smaller person, ask for a smaller speculum, I recomend getting a female doctor, it goes along a lot better if you do, also relax is key, they are uncomfortable, they always will be,i won't lie, i hate them, not just because of that ,but i don't like someone i don't know looking at me down there. It takes maybe 3-4 minutes to do everything they need to do.and then it's over! You should have one of those once a year!
But if's for the best, the check-up can keep you free of infection, and keep you healthy.

what the first person said pretty much sums it up. they will look for some things that are important to your health and don't get discourage by what the second person said as it is important and vital for all women to have them at least once a year if having sex. it really doesn't hurt and the more you go over the years the better you will feel about yourself. it is never a comfortable feeling but again can't stress it enough it is important. I missed one and was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

They use a metal device to spread your vagina (worst part.. feel free to ask for a smaller speculum.. they have them) then they scrape you with a little bottle brush type device and maybe a big q-tip or two (depending on the tests).

It's over in about 1 minute.

You don't need a PAP test, they are inaccurate and if you are anything like me they cause spotting for 2-3 days. Anything that causes that kind of damage can not be good for you.
