It depends on the food and it depends on the floor. If it's something sticky, then no, I wouldn't eat it off the ground because it would probably have some nasty hair or dirt stuck to it. If it's like a chip or cookie (or Skittle), I say why not.

I used to pick used gum from the streets and eat it. I'm not even joking.. I was little, but it's no excuse. Thankfully I never contracted a disease. Now in my years of experience I've learned there are certain rules when it comes to eating food from the ground.
'The Rules':
1)The Five Second Rule - If you pick it up before 5 seconds, it's okay to eat it.
2)The Sticky Side Up Rule - If, let's say a slice of buttered bread, falls and lands with the butter facing down, you can't eat it. If it lands butter side up, it's all good!
3)The No One Saw It Rule- If no one saw it, it didn't happen. Quickly pick your food up, remove any fluff or hair and resume eating before someone notices.

It depends on the kind of food and the condition of the ground -- also on how hungry I am.
Of course, there's always the three-seconds rule.

As long as it doesn't fall butter side down... and only on the floor, not the ground.

I follow the ten second rule only if I know it's on my own floor...if it's elsewhere forget it because you don't know how clean that floor is...
