You know in many parts of the world it is illegal to get an ultrasound for the purposes of discovering the sex of the baby.
Why do you feel the need to know, whatever it is, it is. And don't lie to your doctor. There is a reason they do not recommend repeated ultrasounds for no reason.

there's no guarantee that if you finally convince your ob to have an ultrasound that you'll be able to tell. One of the girls I work with had several ultrasounds and they never knew what the baby was because he was uncooperative at first and then he was just too big at the end and they couldn't get an angle to work to see. Are you really hoping for one gender? Is that why you want this so badly? And what happens if when you do get your ultrasound and the baby is another sex (hypothetical)? Are you going to be disappointed? At 18 weeks I found out I was having a boy and had convinced myself it was a girl and there was no one to convince me otherwise--until they did the ultrasound. Don't get me wrong, I adore my son, but the first thought that went through my head was, "I'm supposed to have a girl, what do you mean it's a boy?" Be happy with whatever baby you get. Yes, you can do some more preparation if you know the sex, but a couple years ago my sister's friend was all prepared to have a baby girl, had the nursery done, clothes washed and had more than one ultrasound say it's a girl and the doctor said, "It's a boy!" and she said "It's a what?" Ultrasounds are a lot better, but be aware that you might still end up with a pink blanket when you expected blue.

You'll find out soon enough. It's not like you're never going to know the sex! Be patient! Ultrasound is actually not recommended as a routine procedure, so the 2 peeks you've had already are more than some mothers get. We found out with our first, but didn't even have any u/s with #2 or #3. Honestly, not knowing was better.

I have 4 children and didn't find out ahead of time what any of them were going to be. Even if you make up a story that prompts your doctor to order an ultrasound, you still risk the chance that the baby will not be lying in a position that the technician will be able to determine the sex. I think every mom REALLY wants to know what the baby is, but most just have to wait until the birth to find out.

Some doctors will do an ultrasound if you tell them that your baby is not moving as much as he or she was before. I don't like to lie but that is the only thing that I can think of. Where I am from they will give them to you until you get an answer about what sex they are.

I am sorry that this does not answer your question, but i read the answers you were given. My first pregnancy was in Germany. The Dr's there give ultrasounds every time you visit. They have a lower percentage of birth defects. So, I do not see how an ultrasound can hurt a child. It is true that ultrasounds don't always show the sex, and it is only a guess. Buy green and yellow baby items...they go for both sexes. ; )

Usually you get an ultrasound at about the mid-point in your pregnancy, so don't lose heart that you might not have another one. It's entirely possible.
And as for knowing gender, the ultrasound won't always tell you. We had our last ultrasound at 19 weeks and, while we got to see the little hands, feet, and face (so adorable!), the baby covered itself up "down there" and wiggled its fingers at us. They have a mind of their own. Plan on a surprise, and don't fake a medical emergency. It's just never a good idea.

If you are willing to pay out of pocket you can just call up a Imaging Center. Most doctors will send a patient to an place that does x-rays, ultrasounds, mammograms, etc. It's expensive ($300+), those practices will take you (if you make an appointment) without a doctor's recommendation.
I understand your desire to have the sex known- it's much easier to be prepared for the birth if you have the things you need (gender specific clothes and blankets, etc)

I thought all doctors did an ultrasound at 20 weeks to check and make sure the baby is growing correctly?

My OB offers a free "sex check" ultrasound, but he has the equipment right in his office.
Ask about getting a nuchal scan. This checks anatomy of the baby (usually around 20 weeks so it may be too late) and for signs of chromosomal problems. Just tell her you are worried about genetic or congenital problems.
