All right... I worked with the breastfeeding teachers at the hospital and know enough about breastfeeding to write a book. It's easy to be an expert about this stuff because a friend of a friend of a friend's baby got sick after they drank milk after their mom had a glass of wine 2 days after she drank. It is PERFECTLY okay for you to have a couple drinks while you're breastfeeding. You don't have to pump and dump any milk. Breastmilk is CONSTANTLY being replenished. It's not like you're keeping a gallon of milk in your breasts until your baby is ready to feed. Wait 2-3 hours after you drink and then the milk is perfectly safe to feed to your baby. I breastfeed and had a couple drinks several times after I had my baby and she is progressing wonderfully. Here is an EXCELLENT article that goes into more detail about drinking and breastfeeding. Have fun, but be safe!

As usual, none of these people know what they are talking about or have reliable references. Here is THE TRUTH about alcohol and breastfeeding:

The American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Drugs classifies alcohol (ethanol) as a “Maternal Medication Usually Compatible With Breastfeeding.”

For each drink you have, it takes about 2 hours to eliminate the alcohol from your bloodstream. (Per Thomas Hale, who is *THE* expert on drugs and breastfeeding.) Pump or feed right before you have your first drink. If you have some expressed breastmilk, that can be giving to baby if needed.

There is no need to pump & dump milk after drinking alcohol (unless you get engorged). Pumping and dumping does not speed the elimination of alcohol from the milk. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. The alcohol leaves your milk in the same way it leaves your bloodstream.

A good rule of thumb is, "if your brain is clear, your milk is too" or "if you are sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to nurse."

If you want to dring for the relaxation it gives, use catnip or valerian root. Catnip is safest for children, but too much of anything can cause at least temporary problems. If taking an herb, I'd wait 5 hours after the last dose, just to be safe. An interestng thing about valerian is that the literature claims that it actually improves --rather than inhibits-- driving performance!

If you are planning on getting drunk then I wouldn't advise it. But, if you just plan on having a few then it should be ok if you pump first and wait on the alcohol to get out of your system before actually breastfeeding anymore(1 hour to every 12 oz)

Pre-pump enough to feed her for 2 days. My sister told me about the pump and dump method. Baby can't have your milk for 48hours after you drink (1 -2 cocktails ). However if you plan on getting really drunk then you will need to wait longer. Alcohol poisioning is not something your baby needs, so becareful.

But please, defintely don't take your baby with you to the bar - not classy at all.

Bottoms up!!!

I'd definitely not breastfeed for 24 hours. Just to be safe, I'd wait longer. Do you have someone to take care of your baby overnight? You don't want to be intoxicated and have to deal with an emergency situation with your baby. Just something to think about. I had friends that had small children and when they went to parties they took turns on who got to drink and who didn't. That way there was someone who was always sober to look after the children.

Do not drink and breast feed at all. If for some reason something is wrong with the baby later on you will feel guilt for the rest of your life.
It is very dangerous. If you are going to party then you should bottlefeed.

No drinking what so ever until you are don't breastfeeding. It will be in your milk. If you have to go out have a soda.
