It gave moviegoers a chance to participate. How often does *that* ever happen? Compared to a sporting event, the vocabulary available to communicate with is infinitely better than the typical "John 3:16" sign or booing the umpire, hitting a beach ball or doing the wave.

It totally re-arranged the entire cinema experience. Every showing is different, and it will always be current because of that fact.

Besides all the reasons you listed I'd say it's also visually stimulating. Really till this day I haven't seen anything like it (put it all together and you have one heck of a memorable musical) I can vividly remember the very first time I seen RHPS I was 5 years old and it was on t.v. i was flippin blown away! Still love it till this day. Tim Curry Is the best! Anyone like him in the worst witch? I sure do!
Enjoy this little ditty. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmG80v473AI

Your own answer is only part of it. The controversy was also because the movie treated these ideas as normal, at least for some people.

In other words, exactly the opposite of what the religion of the majority at the time (Catholicism) said was "normal".

I never saw it. Went to a midnight showing and when I saw the people standing around out front, decided I'd rather not go. Glad you found resolution though.
