What is your opinion on this disagreement of what constitutes "a few"?

This is essentially the situation - Suzie told Cheryl that she would bring a few of her students to join Cheryl's parade float of 8 adults. Cheryl said that is fine thinking it was 3 or 4 students. The night before, Suzie says it is 12 students. Cheryl told Suzie that was not okay as "a few" is 3 maybe 4. Suzie is furious with Cheryl for "backing out" because she told her students they could go. Is 12 a few?

Suzie has 15 students and she said in an e-mail "I would love to join you guys this Saturday and would love it if I could bring a few of my students."

I feel badly for the students but this is Suzie's problem to solve --- just wanted some reassurance we were not being harsh...

No, the maximum of a few would be five. Suzie is being very inconsiderate, she should have confirmed the number of sudents she was going to bring before telling them they could go.

Good question. I think the exact number of "a few" depends on what's the number of the total. For example, if I'm bringing a "few of my video games" to a friend's house, I may very well bring 10-15 because I have over 50 games. Few would be a small portion of the large group.

If Cheryl teaches high school and has a hundred or more students, then 12 would be a few. But if she has a class size of 25-30 and she's bringing 12, that's not a few, that's 1/3 to 1/2.

Technically, and by definition, I believe, a "couple" is 2 and a "few" is 3. "Some" is anything more than 4.
