Well what struck me is that there was not that much to buy in the stores and everything in short supply, so it didn't really matter if you had a little bit of money because sometimes the stores were only allowed so many of certain items. What struck me as very inventive was that the nylons the girls wore in those days had a black line in the back of the legs, well the girls used to paint this line with eye brow pencils, on the back of their legs so it would look like they were wearing silk stockings.

cotton and denim became very popular, people used to make their own clothes back then as well not a piece of material was wasted either, the dresses, coats and so on were taken apart and made into other clothing for chidren, I remember my grandmother making coats and hats from one of my mother's old wool coat she had worn as a young woman for my sister and I because we had to go to school, the scraps were either made into rugs nothing was thrown out like we do today, everything was reused in some way, recycling was easy when you didn't have everything even cans became useful in some way or another.
